Is it safe to provide ip address to someone else?

My friend was asked by a stranger to provide his ip address. He gave his ip address to the stranger (internet). He is afraid now. He fears if the stranger uses the ip address for phising or hacking or anyother misuse against him. I don't know whether it is possible to phise or hack someone's computer,if his ip is known. Please help my friend. Is it possible for hacking someone's system, if his ip is revealed? If so, what is the solution to get rid of such a risk?
