While I think free downloads can really encourage people to find new artists instead of just what's on the radio, if people don't go out and buy the cd after downloading a few songs, it's no good. That's what's hurting music sales. However, marketing more than just a few types of music would help. I think the industry should supply a few sample tracks, and then a place to easily buy the rest of the album if the listener likes it.

Yeah its good for that reason, but buying them should still be a priority to listeners.

I don't think downloading hurts sales at all. I download music frequently and I still spend money on music. I look for a lot of obscure and out of print stuff which is getting hard to find now even on the free download sites because the music companies want to control it all. I really miss the old original Napster because I got a lot of stuff from there.

I know some of my son's friends have 40-60 gig of music they downloaded from limewire.
They did not pay and do not intend to pay, why should they, they get it for free.
We are talking these kids have 1000'S of dollars of music they got through file sharing, This get must turn to millions on the country wide level.
They have to do something to stop this, I have to pay for them to steal.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. For the few who do that there are more of us who download and buy. I am tired of the music companies dictating what I listen to and by downloading I can hear songs that they chose only to market in select areas. In fact they have made more sales from me and I imagine other people too because we would have never known about some foreign releases of things if it weren't for finding them on limewire.

I actually don't think that people downloading music on their home computers is actually hurting the music industry. I honestly believe that if someone is a true fan of an artist that they may listen to a few tracks online, but they will go out and buy the album. I know that for me I love having the cd and the liner notes. I like to know who wrote the songs and who played on the songs. I know you can find out this information online, but for me it isn't the same... and most of my friends are exactly the same.

I don't think it coulb be negative....
There are so many bands around the world that I never hear about... but if I download a music of a unknow band and enjoy it so much maybe I would buy a cd fro this band in a virtual store. Its make the sales increase.
It is true ^^ I listing a song by a japanese band (L'Arc~en~Ciel) 2 years ago and enjoy. Now I have 4 CDs and 2 dvds of this band.

A little bit of both. The marketing isn't very great. But now I think people are downloading more illegally than they are legally, or just purchasing an album.
