Random acts of human kindness

My friend and business partner is always saying "people won't remember anything about you but how you made them feel." She's so right about that. I was looking for a scrap of material I wrote for one of my stories, and I had gushed on paper about this situation I'll tell you about...now...
At a certain point in my life I was so down that I tried to melt into oblivion every time I came into contact with other people. Well, one day I had an appointment with a career counselor to look towards my future, a future I didn't really believe in, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I tend to forget everyone else at the place, but I remember the secretary Ruth, because of her soft voice, her offer to get me coffee or anything i needed to be comfortable. She also told me I was in the right place at the right time. Anyway, it was the small act of human kindness i needed to start to rise from the depths of a depressive state.
we've all had moments like these...what's yours.

I was so inspired reading Chicken Soup for the Soul that I did some random act of kindness. I decided to do it on my birthday. I paid the toll of the next 5cars behind me. It was just a small amount but it made me happy knowing that the next 5cars don't even know me and there's no way they can say thank you to me. But I know that I just made they day and will be smiling with surprise the whole day. Who knows? They might even pass on to others what they just received that day.
It also happened to my brother when his car got stalled along the busy highway that some guy even went back after he bought some rope so he can help pull my brother's car at the shoulder of the road. Makes you think how to repay the kindness of that may who went out of his way to help.

I have had an experience when I was downright broke and lost my wallet and handphone, only to realize that I lost my items when I boarded the cab. I was cursing and swearing at my bad luck and the driver felt sorry for me. Instead of telling he will have to charge me the fare, he listened and comforted me and decided not to collect the fare from me. He gave ma parting word of blessing.
God bless his soul.

Hi voldemort!
Everyday, I told myself before going to my job (where it is defined as the worst job ever and most of them will tell me "go find another job", "what is your number and i will call you at this time" or "f*k you") "here we go again with this stupid project and in this stupid life" but everytime when I see my co-workers smile and talk to me, I feel ok just enough to continue this boring job.

Hello friend, you're making me reflect here and I want to thank you for making me do that.
At the moment I can't do justice to a reply. Other than to say when a person made me feel special and taught me how to receive it started to change my life.
People like Ruth are special, she spoke to YOU not because it was her job but because she saw you.
I think it's beautiful that you started this thread.
Heartness.

wow what a great story. Mine was about a year ago, when some people I thought were friends turned on me for no reason and started talking bad about me. I had one friend that was new to my life, tell me she loved me, knew the stuff they were saying was a lie, and took me to savannah ga for a weekend. She had to go house hunting there and took me and my daughter. She came into my life when I needed her,and simple act of her wanting me there and talking to me the long ride down, and even buying me dinner, when she didnt have to, made me realize there are still great people and friends in the world.

I try to do random things whenever possible. I've helped people collect change when it fell all over, opened doors for people, pointed out people dropping things, for customers telling them they gave too much or forgot something, when I found things at work not keeping them but returning them to those who owned them, etc.
I believe what goes around comes around and we should treat others like we want to be treated. If I want to be treated great I do the same to others. Its how I'd like the world to be if it was perfect.

Couldn't agree with you more. Even something as simple as holding the door open for people can sometimes make their day.

Thats part of a Maya Angelou quote and just so happens to be one of my favourites and also very true....I find that the littlest things, the seemingly smallest act of kindness can do wonders..I notice it when I tell a cashier for example "thanks..have a great day/night/weekend" or when I help an elderly person or anyone really reach that item on the top shelf that they just cant get too.. I REALLY see it when its my kids beign the helpful ones or saying thanks have a nice day etc...ppl tend to just light up and I love it! I feel it when someone holds the door open for me or even when walking past a complete stranger and they smile and say good morning....I always try to live mindfully and be kind however I can in life...I really couldnt see myself being any other way ya know..

fundamentally it's better to give than to receive. or so, the saying goes. it feels to good to give, but it also feels nice to receive...in time of need. i almost always try to give of myself many times in life. but there are just so many times i had fallen into depressive states(just mild ones...but enough to make one break into pieces) and real true friends would come along and bring me up through plain, simple acts of said human kindness. there's just too many to mention i wish there was more space to tell all. i'm just thankful for all of them.

We all will be surprised at the impact we have on others' lives. Just a simple "hello" to a stranger can make that person's day. A smile to someone...just simple things like that can make a huge difference.

I have always loved random acts of kindness..I perform them whenever I can..I work in pharmacy and often have to see people chose between their medicine or money for food or rent... There have been many times when I put $10 or so against the bill and nobody knows who did it..or I will pay for the entire prescription if I can and I know the person is really in need. The other thing I am big on is buying clothing for children when I know their parent's can't afford it or are having a tough time...I find out the sizes and then buy things, get a gift receipt and leave it on their porch or have someone deliver it to them...My favorite time is Christmas...I buy gift cards I can afford and then slip them into needy peoples bags, hands or just make the offer to their face...If I were a millionaire I wouldn't be for long....but I'd sure be happy being able to help those in need...When I was a child I saw a woman putting groceries on a porch of some neighbors that had just lost their job...I asked her why she didn't ring the doorbell and talk to them..she said it is always better to do something out of the kindness of your heart without looking for thanks...I remembered that and have tried to do it whenever I can...

I call them "little rays of sunshine". Like the guys who let the women have their seats in the jeepney. Or one time, there was this jeepney driver who treated all his passengers like VIPs: "Thank you ma'am, here's your change. City hall, who's getting off? Thank you for riding sir, ma'am, come again." I was in a lousy mood that time and by the time I got off at my stop I was feeling considerably better. Sometimes its just those little things like basic human courtesy that can make a difference in an otherwise depressing day.
I can also count at least three times when I was a student walking home from my classes with no money for transportation and tricycle drivers gave me a ride home and then refused to take payment for it. And once, I got caught in the rain and this taxi driver and his wife who were going grocery shopping gave me a ride to school and refused to take payment.

The skeptic in me says that there are no such things as random acts of kindness. The traditionalist in me says that there are.
I have had random acts of rudeness put on me lately and I am not sure where they come from.
I always hope for the best in people and I continue to be a good person who genuinely cares about others.

There have been countless times I have had random acts of kindness benifit me. I am a mother of two young kids and I always have my arms full of something. There have been countless times people have come running to help just when I needed it. I hope I can help others someday.

Ever hear of "pay it forward"?
I so believe in this!
