Post-Katrina Mississippi - Before and After photos of the Mississippi Gulf Coast after Katrina

Just wanted to let everyone see what my home state still looks like after Katrina. The most recent pic here was taken right after Katrina, but nothing much has changed in the last year and a half. My husband and I drove along the beach about a week and a half ago, and it was so bare I was almost in tears because of the change from the memories I have of the Gulf Coast as a little girl. I've heard so much about New Orleans and Katrina lately, I just wanted to remind everyone where Katrina actually hit, which was the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and that we had almost total destruction also.

ladybella, thank you so much for sharing these photos. They give such a good idea of the devastation that occurred and that still has not been dealt with. I watched a special on one of the News Stations (CNN I believe) recently about all of the problems people in Mississippi are having with the insurance companies (especially State Farm). It makes me sick that these insurance companies are continuing to show huge profits every year while refusing to pay claims for damages that they should be bound to pay legally. There is no question that the majority of the damage was due to the high winds, as was pointed out in the documentary. Yet the insurance companies are arguing semantics and nit-picking the wording of the policies to avoid paying. In the meantime, a huge part of the state remains in ruins, as your pictures show. And people are suffering every day, living in trailers and inadequate housing. The federal government needs to step up to the plate for once and make a decision. Force the insurance companies to pay so that people can resume their lives. Enough is enough. My heart goes out to you and to all of those who continue to live with this every day.
