I take synthroid for my hypo-thyroid disease. I think my level of medicine is good right now. In the past few months tho I have had maybe 4 incidents that happen randomly where I feel like my neck muscles or maybe my tongue sortof tenses up and I feel as if I almost cannot swallow. It's similar to the sharp neck muscle twang you sometimes get if you turn your head a weird way too fast. Just wondering if anyone else has had this sortod neck/throat/tongue experience and if you think it could be related to the synthroid medicine that I take.
thanks!

I had an overactive thyroid just after having my children my first was really bad I had it for 5 months before it was detected and it was that bad I would colapse everytime I walked up the stairs and couldn't even stand in the shower, it was only when I notcied after everybody told me I was so skinny that I weighed myself daily and then noticed I had lost 2kg in one day I went to the the doctor who then told me I was lucky if I had left it any longer I would have ended up in a coma...
I took propylthiouracil(PTU) to control it and it worked. It was better when I feel pregnant with my second child but then reacurred 4 months after giving birth, but I knew the symptoms so got right onto it.
My specialist told me that if my throat got really sore than to cease the medication and see him because it may be a reaction to the medication, something to do with your white blood cells. But what you are experiencing sounds different to that. I had trouble with my goiter so enlarged it was hard to swallow and hurt at time...
I think you will be o.k, if your worried go back to your doctor..
How long have you been on the medication have they tried to wean you off?

I've been on the synthroid for 6 years now. Have never tried to wean off of it. My dosage has been adjusted up over the years based on blood lab work.
I probably need to go to the regular Dr. too and see what he has to say about this issue I mentioned here. It's just so vague and weird of an experience that it's hard to really explain or pinpoint what I think is causing it so I doubt the Dr. would do much about it right now without it getting worse or more frequent.
We'll see... if I ever figure it out I'll post again here about it.
thx for your response.
:)

That seems like a long time to be on medication for a overactive tyroid I know an underactive one you need to take it for the rest of your life. Overactive is meant to be easier treated, but I sopose everybody is different I still have to get regualr blood test to make sure...
Maybe this is your way of the body telling you it's had enough of the medication???

Oh no no sorry if there was confusion... it IS underactive thyroid that I have which is why I have been on the meds for 6 years since I started them.

Well - like the previous responders said before me, mention it to your doctor. I hope that you have some kind of medical coverage because the doctor visits & the price of the medications REALLY add up.
If you're not satisfied with the doctor's answers, you can always go to a dofferent doctor for a second opinion. Let us know what's happening after the doctor's appointment.

Thanks. Yes fortunately I do have health insurance. The thyoid dr. didn't think it was anything to be worried about. It hasn't happened again since I first posted this but I have an appt. for a throat ultrasound next week anyway just to look around and know that everything looks fine.

Just an update that I did go for the thyroid ultrasound yesterday. The ultrasound guy said after the appt. that he didn't see anything that looked bad. I'll have to wait and hear the final report though from my Dr.

Well, let's hope for the better in the final report. Hopefully, they didn't miss anything either.

I have this happen too. I have Hashimotos and take Synthroid, have taken this for about 9 years. I too have the experiences your describing and my doctor doesn't make anything of it. I have a tension in my tongue from time to time and sometimes my tongue feels thick. Also sometimes feel tension in my throat and pressure in my neck.
If you find out what's causing this let me know. I just convinced myself it was tension unrealated to my condition, but maybe I was wrong to assume this.

Oh interesting. well, I think I have figured out from the ultrasound that I had a while back that I now how a small goiter. I have learned that not taking my thyroid meds (synthroid) exactly as I should on a regular schedule can make a goiter start to grow. Mine is multi-nodule goiter with no dominant node which is somewhat normal.

Hello monica , I wish you the best health in life ! I have some tips for your condition :
#1 watch your weight and blood pressure, hypothyroidism tends to cause increase in blood pressure and weight because of the low metabolism . The problem isnt in being overweight ,its that hypothyroidism is the most common cause of heart disease in women ,so I recommend you watch your fat intake and always do LIGHT exercise .
#2 if you get heavy periods your treatment may need to be adjusted ,becasue heavy periods lead to anemia and weakness .
#3 if you get shakes, fevers, diarrhea, fast heart beats it means yu are taking too much of the MEDICINE ,the daily dose might need to be adjusted .

I have been taking Synthroid for several years now for hypothyroidism, and have never experienced those types of symptoms. I have seen comments here suggesting that you wean yourself off your medicines, or that you should not need to be on the medicine for so long. Please do not listen to such advice unless it comes from a doctor.
Anyway, since you wrote this quite a while ago, how are things going for you now? Are the symptoms still the same or have they gone away? Are your medications still the same or did your doctor reduce the dosage?

I hope that whatever it was that was causing problems, stays away from you. Anyway, good luck.

Oh thanks for asking. Actually it seems to have stopped. My doctor never thought it was related to thyroid meds and the ultrasound looked fine. So who knows what that was?!? I hope it never happens again.

I have been on synthroid for several years. I have never had my neck muscles or tongue tense up as you have described. If that happened to me, I would definitely be talking to my doctor right away. It could be a simple muscle spasm or it could be something more serious.

I know. Thank you for saying so. I do have another Dr. appt. this week. The next step will be to schedule an ultrasound and I'll request that they do that.
