Today's hot topics and today's top discussions - what is the difference?

I was just looking at the left side of my screen, and I wondered.. what do you think is the difference between "Today's hot topics" and "Today's top discussions"? They seem similar to me in essence. My one thought so far is that perhaps 'today's top discussions' means the discussions with the most replies, but today's hot topics are topics that have gathered responses very quickly.
What do you think? I'm just curious! ^_^

Okay, here is what I've been able to break down:
Top Discussions are discussions with the high positive ratings while Hot Topics are the ones with the most responses. Hence why the top discussions change so often, as more posts gather more high positive ratings.
I used to think it had something to do with page views, but after monitoring and doing some digging, I'm convinced it's the ratings.

Wow! You've really done some research. Thanks! I think that you must be right. Your explanation has a lot more scientific value than mine did. Mine was just a pure guess. I did wonder why the top discussions change so often, and your explanation makes it make perfect sense. Cool! I appreciate your reply ^_^

I have not been online much for the last 4 days. Your article is forcing me to look deeper into this new mylot! LOL I was only planning on commenting on discussions tonight as I am getting tried already. Shame on you! LOL
Hum They sound the same to me. I guess if one of them dont catch your attention then they hope the other one will. LOL

LOL!! I'm sorry that I caused you to think more about the site, and momentarily took your attention away from working on replying to discussions. Hey, it took me a few days of the new layout to really look into this whole hot topics vs. top discussions thing! *laugh* It just caught my eye today, and I know there there's some major difference between the two because they seem to have quite different topics on each. ^_^

I have never thought about it before, but now that you have brought it to my attention, your right they do seem like they are the same.

I agree they have always seemed like the same thing to me also. Maybe the "hot" ones are just smokin more. ;-) lol And I'm glad to see that mylot has regained at least some of their senses and upped your rating. :-)

Aw, thanks!! It took me over a week, but yes - I am back up to an eight. I at least hope to be able to stay there, but who knows.. I really hope so, though! ^_^ Ideally, I really want to be back at a ten, but hey, that could take awhile *laugh*
