Recently, on television I watched a show on the Discovery channel that explained what a risk EMP's are. An EMP is an electro magnetic pulse. This is what happens after a nuclear blast that takes out all electricity in a given radius. What do you think would happen if someone detonated an EMP high in the atmosphere and electrical systems in the US were completly down for months or years?

I also watched dat show... Future Weapons.. I watched it yesterday. The bomb that works on emp is called e-bomb. Few nations are working on it... and it was said that the most powerful nation, USA, can be brought down to knees... the only thing which can do this is an EMP attack.
EMP attack can be in the form of an e-bomb or a nuclear bomb... both create intense electromagnetic pulses.
As far as i have understood, what happens is dat d electric field induces magnetism... and electromagnetic field is created... now its pulses are sent far and wide.. and dis electromagnetic pulse induces electric field in electronic circuits and thus they get short-circuit and are damaged permanently. Pulses can be so strong that they can literally "fry" the circuits....
Now dats bad... during wartime, if this is used on a nation... dat nation will be totally handicapped without any electronics... as in todays world.. electronics is the backbone of almost anything

well it would certainly be devistating! im sure depending on what time of year it would cost many lives. not to mention the ppl in hospitals that would die.
did the show actually say the an EMP COULD be detonated high in the atmosphere and have a large scale effect on the ground?
