i really do not know but the soldiers pierced him hard on the chest and blood started oozing out....and they pierced him on the left side...that's the reason it is interpreted like that.....

there are many debates on this. but if you go by the hanging from the cross, science has proven that just the hanging by the arms itself would be enough to kill him anyway, that the spear that was shoved into his cheast didn't do as much damage as gravity pulling his weight down from his hands. thats what i was told while in school. it makes sense to me.
