Heavy water is the same as ordinary water except that the two hydrogen atoms of the water molecule are replaced by 2 deutrium atoms. As such it is sometimes symbolised D2O instead of H2O. Heavy water is is approximately 10% heavier than ordinary water.

heavy water refers to deuterium oxide, i.e D20. it is transparent almost colorless liquid with slight hint of blue. its boiling point is 101.4 C Harold urey discovered the isotope of deutrium and later concentrated into water. you know india is the second largest producer of heavy water. it also exists in three phases i.e., solid , liquid and gas

hydrogen has 3 isotopes..protium,deuterium n tritium..protium is ordinary hydrogen..when 2 moles of it combines vid 1 mole of oxygen u get a mole of water..when u replace deuterium vid protium u get heavy water..as deuterium is heavier than protium..due to mass rise u hv its boiling point slightly higher than ordinary water..its used in nuclear reactor to slow down the fast neutrons and also used as coolent
