There is uproar at the moment after Jack Straw has said he makes women take off their hijabs if they want to see him in his constituency. He has now received death threats from a few people.
What are your views on women wearing the hijab (outfit worn by female muslims to cover up everything apart from their eyes).

I haven't heard of this but I think this Straw person is completely out of line. he is just as bad as the people that may be telling these women they HAVE to wear it. People should be free to wear what they want and if these woman are wearing the hijab because of their own religious convictions then that is their right. no one should be allowed to tell them differently.
When I lived in Chicago I saw women all the time with veils on (never the full robes though) and I never really thought much about it except when it was a million degrees out and I wondered how hot it must be under there. I always wonder if they really believe in wearing it or if is just so ingrained in them that they don't think twice about it (like other people that wear crosses or charms of saints). But it isn't my place to ask.

I think it is up to the individual to decide what she will wear. We don't have much strife between people of different religions where I live. No one thinks twice about whether a woman is wearing a Hijab or western clothing in any of the places I have worked or schools I have attended.
