Hi there...hiccups are caused by an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. The sudden rush of air into the lungs causes the glottis to close creating the "hic" noise.

forgive me...a glottis is space between the vocal cords. Diaphragm is the sheet of muscle extending across the lower part of the ribcage.
My medical background sometimes makes me forget that not everyone understands all the medical terminology
