Why do Americans know (or care for that matter) so little about Canada?

How many of you know what the capital of Canada is, quick, what is your answer? (It is Ottawa) How many of you knew that? I was writing a piece for an US based newspaper and quizzed a friend that works for the state govt in Iowa and out of an office of 20, 2 knew what it was! Why does Canada seem so insignificant? After all, we are your closest neighbour (we have the largest unarmed boarder in the word) and your largest trading partner. What gives?
