My son is 2 I did not start reading books to him till he turned 1. But I introduced him to book when he was 5 months old. Books with pictures is what he likes most and I tell him what the picture is. I also introduce him early with alphabet and numbers, 18 mos old and he can count up to 10 but he skip number 1(it's because when I ask him to count, I start with 1 and he follows with number 2) and seven(probably because it's hard for him to pronounce). He turned two last december and he pretty much recognized all the letters in the alphabet. He has a board with magnetic letter on it, and he will come up to me and tell me what letter he's got on his hand.

I have no kids yet but my aunt who is Dean in College of Education in one of the reputable school of education have told us that reading books to your baby even if she was still an infant will do good for your child. Such knowledge will be imparted subconsciously in their minds. I had few hands on experienced about it with my niece as her mom is bookworm and constantly reading books to his baby. I could see development from speech to mind development as his child could remember what her mom taught him or show him in the book

I started reading to them when they were very young. My twins were reading by the age of 2. I believe in reading to them as young as possible because they learn words and can extract meaning from what they read. You are doing a smart thing by reading to your baby. You are his first and best teacher in life.

I do try to read to my son. In most cases it's my wife because i'm either busy when we decide to read on or he doesn't want me lol. I think he prefer's his mother when it comes to stories just like he comes to me when he wants a rocket ride or pat a cake etc. We bought him disney collect of books. I can't wait to read these to him and when we get another chance we'll build him a bigger book collection. we're currently on around 30 something + if you count each story. I had millions as a kid so i hope he'll enjoy them when he's older! Good discussion! Kudos.. ~Joey

I have been reading to my babies since before they were born, and my oldest was only hours old when his father was holding him amd reading to him. It is important for babies to hear the rhythems of language, and to have the bonding time with their parents. If a parent can't read themselves, they should tell their children stories.

that's wonderful :) having his father read to him. i usually do the reading to our baby because he has to work. but whenever he's free, he finds time to read or play with him no matter what. i totally agree with you, reading time is also bonding time of the parents and their kids :) thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

I don't have a child yet - but whenever I do get pregnant I plan to read to my baby while it's still in the womb, listen to books on tape, music, etc. And I plan to always read to my baby even as she grows into a child.

I started reading to my son when he a newborn. Now, he sits on my lap and after I read a book or just a page he'll start turning the pages and babbling like he is reading. It is so cute. I love to read and hope that he will enjoy it some day. I know that he like to play with them right now.
