What Will The Religions Of The Future Be Like?

Some 4,000 years ago, the ancient Greeks and Egyptians would have frowned at the idea that people would end up believing in a single god and dared to doubt the existence of almighty Zeus or Amon-Ra. Even 1,000 years ago, the Roman Catholic Church was trying to prevent with more or less success the apparition of various differing dogmas throughout Europe. So what do you think religions will be like 1,000 or 4,000 years from now? Don't forget that Man has always been quite good at creating gods and 'holy' teachings to somehow guide his life and abate a little bit his immense fear of death...

Religion has a very bright future, there will always be new charalatans born on earth who will find willing followers and they would indulge in tricks like miracles, which the gullible public will believe and then we have a new religions. I myself attended a meditation camp it was a rigorous 10 day program, the guy who was constanly advising people on how to medidate, moral values etc. eventually became so popular, by the 6th day of the course nearly everyone in the meditation hall bowed before him and where chanting his name and calling him a great man etc. The most funny part is that the guy was not even present!, the entire program was conducted via recorded tapes, just imagine how people can be brainwashed within a few day's. If anybody tries to question the incidents that are going on in that meditaition camp, that person was immediately subjected to ridicule as an unbeliever. My dear friend that is the basis of all religions, its nothing but organized madness!. There will be plenty of new religions, however, what will happen to the existing religions, is the big question.

Your story is quite frightening, but I'm glad to see that your brainwashing didn't work! :) As some philosopher (Diderot, I think) said: "Religion was born the day the first crook met the first s*cker." ;)

By then, there could be even more religions. And even more confusion and conflict than there is today. I don't think there will be a single God. I mean that religions will still have their own ideas about God. It is really very difficult to imagine the world in a 1,000 years. So many things could happen to change the direction of religion. Hopefully, at least it is my dream, one day there will be no need for religion because everyone will know God does exist and will live in a state of goodness.

I love your idea of Mankind finally united, but I'd also like to paraphrase you: "One day there will be no need for religion because everyone will know that it doesn't matter if God exists or not, and will live in a state of goodness." :)

there will be no religion that will take birth in the future becaus ethe age we are living in is so full of sins and alsoo the fact is that the religions tha are now will keep following no matter what , because they are based on truth and humanity and they have a strong hold on the principles .

Religions of tomorrow will undoubtedly be loosely based on the religions of today in my opinion. As through the ages, human kinds interpretations and misrepresentations of what is already written will be used and manipulated to suit whatever purpose or need is required at the time. We will continue to fight over our respective beliefs and we will continue to ignore the purity of religion and what it stands for as commercialisation and pride will reign supreme.

As long as superstition will prevail over the power of the intellect, we'll have all sorts of wacky beliefs that people will call faith. And there will alsways be unscrupulous people to take advantage of it!

I was actually sitting under a ladder the other day, stroking my black cat while counting to thirteen and thinking the same thing!!

*Falls over in a giggling fit* Ohh, the image of a supposedly 'technological future' and what religions they could have.. Can you imagine? "Maci the Goddess of fashion" "Dell the God of technology" Or other things like that..it just strikes me as extremely humorous, but I bet the Egyptians did too, hee ^_^ I imagine people'll invent either some extremely partying deity or an overly serious one..people have a tendency to anyway(Remember the cult of Dionysis? Whoo..what a wild party'n bunch..).

everything is constantly changing in the world even the religion. As long as the belief in religion doesn't transform in to a hatred towards fellow beings, the religions would continue endlessly. Anyway no religion preaches hatred or develops ill feelings towards others but its only the way people misinterpret their religion and come up with their own ways of understanding them. nice discussion thomas.

Of course, it's always a question of interpretation. The Flying Spaghetti Monster is the only Truth! ;)

I think that , if we survive that long, Religion will still exist, many new blends of religions will arise, and since we are on the possibilities field, one thing that will become more problematic as the times goes by, is the non return of Christ, with time that will erode christianity in favor of new religions, eventually as our knowledge grows religion may become just a mythology and restricted to very few minorities groups.

Very good answer! Our current religions will finally end up where they belong: mythology.

That´s a very cool subject! I believe, that religions of the future will have something to do with the corporate philosophy.

well a french philosopher (can't remember his name - i;m really bad with names) said that the 21st century would be a religious century or it will not be at all. so by this being said i belive that from now on we should, but probably won't, find a way to coexist without any fighting about religion. we should try to find a religion, or at least a phylosofical concept that is good enough for us all to accept. or we will find ourselves in a lot of trouble. but from the looks of it that will not happen. so we will probably end up 4000 years from now in the same state as the ancient sumerians did and we will make up our own version of Shamash or something. it's like einstein said... i don't really know with what weapons the 3rd world war will be fought, but the 4th will be fought with sticks and rocks.

This phrase -- "The 21st century will be religious or will not be" -- was attributed to André Malraux, although he always denied having said it and it doesn't feature in anything he's written. He did write, however, that "the greatest problem of the 21st century will be religion".
