A lot of people, icluding me, is afraid of going to the dentists mainly because of the pain that is being associated with what dentists do. When then clean your teeth, the grinding, eventhough it's not as painful as it is unbearable even just the sound of it.

Lucky me for a having a dentist sister :) I have never been afraid of going to the dentist, even my kids......her dental clinic was my playground when I was kid, i even love helping her while she has patients, she even taught me basics of prophylaxis (cleaning).

I'm not :). Some people are afraid because of the different instruments and the large needles. That's just a guess for me. A lot of people are also afraid to get injections and to see doctors.

i think people who are afraid of the dentist are the ones who weren't exposed to seeing dentist at an early age. im not afraid to go to the dentist because when i was still a kid my mom and i go to our dentist regularly.

I am afraid to go because a few of the times I have gone Ive had to deal with dentist who werent exactly gentle. I had one who slipped as he was cleaning my teeth and actually cut my gums with that sharp thing they use...and I also had one who pulled a tooth out on his own using pliers and his entire body weight...it was incredibly painful even though I had pain medication. He caused alot of stress on my mouth which was swollen & bruised for weeks. We found out afterwards that it should NOT have been pulled by the dentist but it should have been done by an oral surgeon because the root was so far down. This dentist went ahead and performed a procedure on me that he KNEW needed to be done a differnt way just so he could take the money. I also had a dentist who had yellow teeth. How is a person with yellow teeth going to tell me how to care for my own?? because of all these situations I now have severe anxiety attacks when I have to go to the dentist. Even to the point of throwing up out of fear.

I guess I am one of the few people who are not afraid of going to the dentist. Everybody in my family hates it, except me and my Mom. Well, I have a high tolerance for pain so I can deal with not-so-gentle procedures. I've heard of horrible experiences from family and friends, and I can't blame them for being traumatized. Also, there are procedures that are more invasive and will require that you be put to sleep. Those would get me a little scared too, especially after hearing about the accidental deaths in supposedly routine procedures.
