Yeah, it seems silly that superman is afraid of heights lol. He's invincible and afraid of falling. We've seen Clark fly when he was possessed or controlled by Jor-El. Also, in the episode where he rips the door off of Lex's jet. He clearly has the potential to do it, but for some reason he just hasn't done it yet. I hope he does it soon. I've been waiting 5 seasons for this.

I've been asking myself that same question. i do know that he's scared of heights, so maybe he just hasn't tried yet.

Flying, more than anything else, signifies superiority over everyone else: "Rising above". This show is about Clark's journey, not Superman's adventures, and it is very revealing of his character that he chooses to stay as close to "normal" as possible. When he says he is afraid of heights in various episodes, he is actually fearing how different he is. All those abilities, yet all he wants is a simple life. He has not quite learned the final lessons needed to become a superhero. Green Arrow's appearance in the show this season, in addition to being kool, is to show us a clearer picture of that line between being a hero in an emergency (in which Clark excells) versus being an active superhero. It seems to come down to Clark still being afraid of what he is and being afraid to release his potential. Eventually he will overcome this by creating the Superman alter-ego. Superman flies. Clark does not fly. It is that simple (for him & for the creators of the show).
