Anyone else had a parent in the military when they were growing up? I mean the Coast Guard, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Foreign Legion ;), not just the Army, but that was my situation. How did having a parent in the Armed Forces affect you growing up?

Both of my parents were Navy lieutenants! My mother was a foreign liaison officer but she got out of the Navy soon after I was born. My dad, on the other hand, didn't retire until I was almost 8 years old in 1992. Prior to that, he was the commanding officer of the Boise MEPS. Even after he retired, we still moved around a lot. The longest I ever spent at one school was two and a half years, and that wasn't until I was in high school.

Wow! I moved around a lot, too, but my mom was a housewife/army wife. I was born in Germany and took a lot of teasing for it (being called a Nazi by kids who didn't even know what one was) once we went to a non-military base school. Living for so long around other kids who were also the children of people in the military made it hard to get used to "normal" kids. They had all lived in the same town all their lives and most still do.

My dad was a soldier in the Israel army. He served in Lebanon for a few years. I am going to be a soldier this year as well. I'm recruiting to the army as a combat soldier, and I will do the best I can to deffend my country.

Is it mandatory to spend time in the Israeli Army is you live in Israel? Or can you opt not to? Good Luck this year and stay safe!!

My (former) Step-Father was in the Navy for most of my childhood. We lived in Florida, Idaho, and California and my mom, sister and I lived here in Oklahoma a few times when he was on short assignments. I like that I have been many places and I feel like I have been exposed to a lot more than some of my friends who have grown up in one place even though it was tiring always being the new girl and such. However living in such proximity to the military I did develop a rather low opinion of the organization and a passionate support of the troops and especially their families because I've seen what they go through on a daily basis.

Since we moved a lot before I turned 10 it had a huge affect on my ability to make friends and fit in.
