I had always presumed something similar- that the stars were linked to the number of friends and referral id-s you have under you domain. Adjacent to your user name is ratings and number in the star is your quality ranking. First one shows your rating among all members. Second one shows the you among the quality people. For getting the rank you should complete minimum 100 postings. Best of luck.

The stars above a persons ID are a rating system. A newcomer won't get theirs until they have made 100 posts. They are suppose to tell people how good a person's discussions and responses are I believe.
