Banks... A convenience, or hassle?

OK! I've not had the best luck with Corporate banks. Just today, I've had $140 in overdraft charges applied to my account. Alright, what realllly erks me, is the fact that I had just put $40 to cover the upcoming check card charges I was going to be putting on there. I mean who can really afford to bite $140 out of their budget? I am just SO mad, I could spit nails!
This isn't the only time this has happened to me. They WONT reverse the fees. They have a time or 2 before, but not any more, unless its a bank error. Each time this has happened, its been over a check card charge, and some deposit. Its not that I'm frivolous with my money. I watch my account like a hawk, logging in online 2 or 3 times a day, keeping my register updated.
Any more, it seems modern banking is just a hassle, and not a convenience. Yet, I ask myself, "how can someone NOT have a checking account?" Then this happens, and I wonder, "WHY do I have one?"Any thoughts you'd like to share about Banks today?
