In Saskatoon located central Saskatchewan province, in Canada's central plains, Saturday a new born infant was left on the door step of a retires construction worker. He found her when he went out to start his car. She had been there any where fomr 1/2 hour to several hours. If he had not found her when he did she would have died. The mother can not be found. They believ that she is young and may have hidden here pregancy. They are not looking to press criminal charges. Do you think they should charge her if she is found? Why or why not?

Of course they are going to say they wont press charges because they want the mother to step forward. Yes, she should be charged with child endangerment. A person who leaves a baby out in the cold for most reasons should be gieen consequences of some kind for their action. There are always exception to the rule as if the mother was kidnapped by someone and dragged away kicking and screaming, or if she went into some kind of an amnesia state. Those would be two instances where she might not have charges brought against her. The police do have to look at all sides before they make a judgement on someone.

She has been found out, she turned herself into the authorities on Monday night. She is 18 yrs old, and a student, with very little support. She has very little contact with her family, which was why she was able to hide the pregnancy. The baby has been placed in a foster home.
I dont know if she will be charged, but I really dont think so. I do think she has permenently lost custody of her child. If she is charged, I dont believe she will do any jail time. I think that she will be closley supervised, though, by the Department of Social services. And maybe, just maybe, some probation.
I dont think she should be charged criminally. She could have done worse, such as throw the baby in the trash or something. It is obvious she wanted to find help.

At 18 years old she should have known that it is dangerous to leave that baby outside. I'm sure she had a winter coat on when she left it out there. If it's to cold for her, it's way to cold for a baby. She also would have known that it is child endangerment to just leave it and that there were other options open to her. That she could have done worse isn't a good excuse. Suppose she does this again? Then what?

I'm glad that she turned her self in. I'm sorry that she felt it necessary to do what she did. You are right she could have thrown the baby in a trash can as so many do. Not all of these young people know about the fact that babies can be left at hospitals fire departments, and police stations and they will not be in trouble. Too many babies are hidden or thrown away.

It is hard to know why any mother would do such a thing but if she was only 18 and had no support, she was probably also very frightened and scared. It is possible that the mother knew this man went to work or out in his car at a certain time every day, so that is why she left the baby there knowing it would be soon found. She could have done a lot worse things I believe and at least now the baby has a chance at life with a loving family, hopefully.
I am not sure that she should be charged but she should have some restrictions placed on her, and that includes regular checks if she has another child in the future. It might never happen again but at least some precautions should be taken. The fact that she had no support, was probably afraid, had little family contact should all be taken into consideration. The other thing is that she might not even have been aware that she was pregnant.
In addition, she should be given a thorough medical check to make sure that everything is alright and also given some counselling, because she will certainly need it I suspect. At the same time, she should have to attend a family planning clinic, so this situation doesn't arise ever again.
It is good to know that she did give the baby a chance at having a life with a loving family. It is also good that she turned herself in, a fact which indicates to me that she was very confused when she left the baby. Certainly she should not be allowed to keep the child and if she does, then it should be under strict supervision.

I feel sad for the mother, perhaps she had no support and did not know what to do.
Are their save heavens there for children? Places people can leave them after a certian ammt of time after birth that they will no longer be in trouble for them? Here you can leave them at hospitals, or firestations.. and the babies will then be taken care of.
Leaving it on someones doorstop.. without even KNOCKING and running off is worse.. she hardly gave the poor child a chance.
I do think she should get in trouble, she could have done WORSE things of course. but she could have CERTINALLY done far better! 18 or not! I was 17 when I had my oldest and I had a little support.. I still have her by the way, and she is 6 years old and, smart wonderful and beautiful. She started 1st grade this year (it's her first year of school, she was 5 when it started.. she skipped K because she is advanced.., and she's in advanced placement for reading). I couldn't imagine having ever put any of my children on a doorstep of some stranger in cold tempuratures..if I didn't think i could handle them when they were born, a safe place would have been were i would have gone and that would have been that.
At least be happy she didn't throw the baby in the trashcan or a dumpster or a river or lake! i read stories like that and they always make me so sad!

I do have to say this is a tough question to answer. Her reasons were valid to her. I'm thankful the baby was still alive. I don't know how other laws are, but here in Michigan, (USA) you can leave a baby at the police, hospital, fire dept., etc., within 72 hours of birth and there will be no questions asked (except for family health history) and no charges will be filed. The child is then placed for adoption. I don't think it's right that she left her baby like she did, especially in the cold. Because of that, I would say she should at least serve probation and also psych therapy. :-)

that poor little baby is lucky to be alive. I don't care how old or desperate the mother was she should have never done something like that. She should be charged for sure. We know from a young age that being out in the cold too long can make us sick or even kill us.

This is hard because in all reality all she had to do was take the baby to the hospital, or police dept and tell them that she couldent take care of the child and they wouldent have asked any questions they would have taken the child and given her a good home.
The thing is she was at least responsible enough to leave the child on a door step and not in the dumpster, or any where worse.

I am so thankful that they found the little baby before anything happened. I don't know about the laws in Canada, but here as long as you leave the baby with someone, or somewhere safe where it will be found quickly, you cannot be charged, having said that, it was too cold to be leaving the baby out side.. it's not somewhere safe, what if a dog or another kind of animal had found the little girl? The mother should have taken the baby to a hospital and left her there, the baby would have been found, and would have had what she needed to survive. Thank God she was found before it was too late.

No I don't think they should charge her. There some states in the United States that have laws that mothers can drop off new born babies without any questions being asked. I think this great. This way these young girls don't do somehing stupid with their babies. So many stories about them killing their babies. Glad to hear that this baby was alright. With so many couple looking to adopt babies this law is a very good thing.

Yes she should be criminally charged. That is sick, it is the child's mother. And that is the saddest part. She was old enough to get pregnant so I have no sympathy for her! Let's leave her naked in the freezing cold to die.
You have to a cold, cruel person to leave a newborn like that. And she deserves to be punished. what a great way for this poor child to start a life.

It a very sad story, why do you give your child away? I can't understand why people are doing this.
I'm glad the baby was found early.
I hope that (if they find the baby's mother) she get's punnished.
I think it's horrible to lay a baby outside in somebody's front door i a bitter cold.

I don't think they should charge her. I think she realizes what she did was wrong, and I doubt she'd do it again.
Sometimes, ignorance is a valid excuse. She put the baby where someone would find it, rather than in the trash or something. And she may not have known that she could leave it at a hospital or a police station, or she might have been too scared to do so.
She must have been very frightened.

it feels really bad to hear tht people do such things......... i guess she must be a coward to run away frm her responsibilities..........
i guess she should be atleast punished in such a manner tht she understands wat she has done..........

Yes they should prosecute her to the fullest extent possible! I'm not sure, but I think Canada has the same law that we do in the States, where you can take your newborn to any hospital, fire station, police station and drop it off, no questions asked! I hope if they find the mother she has a darned good excuse. I don't even know if there could be a good excuse for that.

That is so sad. She should be charged if found. Now days you don't have to do things like that. You can take them to a hospital, police station no questions asked.
