If you could track your kids every move on the internet would you?

My boyfriend said he was listening to a debate on this topic and it got me wondering. So, say you had a teenager...said teenager has access to the internet, myspace, im and email. Would you put a program on your computer so you could track their every move they made? And if you did have this program would you tell your kids about it?
I think that I might do that. I would tell my kids. First I would set up rules. Then I would check up on them once a week or so and scan for key words If they gave me a reason not to trust them maybe watch them even more closely.

Any computer savvy kid could remove that program in an instant. Parents need to be monitoring their kids while their online at all times. Not just checking the history and installing silly programs. Unfortunately, not many parents care that much about their children these days. Many parents are too lazy to care anymore.

I agree with you. I wouldn't do it secretly, I would tell them about it. You can't be too careful these days. Kids are vulnerable, no matter how careful they think they're being. I've known an internet preditor. He was smooth. He was kind. He was a teacher. Now he's in prison. You don't really know someone you meet in cyberspace. My kids are far too precious to me to give them away to the internet.

Wow! The person was a teacher. Someone we would put our trust in as far as our kids are concerned. That saddens me a little. Hopefully prison will help them out.
You are right. You never really know what you are getting into online.

No, it's not really my business what other people do on the internet, even if they were my kids. Surely I would check in on them and make sure they weren't doing anything dangerous, but I wouldn't track their every move. Besides, if they don't clear the history, all of the URLs would be in there.

Yes I would track them. Right now our older 2 are 7 1/2 & 6. We have it to where a lot of websites are blocked. I am not sure if I would tell my teen that they are being tracked or not. I know we would set down ground rules.

ABSOLUTELY! My daughter is only 5 right now..but the internet can be a DANGEROUS place! I will keep track of her internet activity as she gets older. Not that I wouldn't trust HER, I wouldn't trust those around her...children can be naive and not realize how serious or dangerous a situation could be. While I think it is important for kids to have some of their own space and privacy, they also need a certain amount of supervision to ensure their safety. They may think you're being WAAAY over protective, but once they are parents...yes, they'll understand. Now that I am a parent, I understand it all..my mom didn't do the things that she did because she wanted me to be miserable, she did them because she wanted me to be safe, she worried about me. There's not a day goes by that I don't worry about my daughter...from just if she'll be ok sleeping that night, to if she'll get hurt at school....a mom's mind never rests...

I would definitely do it. This is the deal for me - as long as they are living under my roof, they abide by my rules. I would definitely do all that you mentioned and put the computer in a visible area like the living room or something and not in my teenager's room. You can never be too careful these days. Teenagers can be exposed to so many dangerous elements online. Better to be careful than sorry, I say.
