Is it cheating if one copies and pastes from Yahoo Question and Answer forum?

I have seen some user(s) copy questions from other users that participate in Yahoo's Q&A. To me, this is still cheating. One is still copying from one user and pasting as one's own discussion. I know it is not copyrighted because it is also in a forum. But when myLot is partnered with Yahoo, I think this would be a hit that Yahoo would not appreciate.
What do you think?
Mind you, I do not mean to offend anyone that has done this. I merely want to make sure that those that do this understand that it could hold the ramification of being banned or getting a reprimand from myLot. OR...I could be totally wrong here. What do you think?

That definately poses an interesting question. I myself have thought of posting a question there that I had posted there, just to see if I could get more varying viewpoints/suggestions. But I wasn't sure if it was against the rules or not, so I hadn't. I mean technically they are both my question, so I would think it would be ok, but then I didn't want to be "illegal" either. I tend to use this site for more serious in depth discussions, and that one for the more poll/ general type questions.

I agree. If it is your own question and you state in the discussion that you posted on Yahoo but you wanted to post it here also, I think that is fine! :)
It is your thought and your discussion.
But when a person copying from anyone on Yahoo and posts it here, I think that is what is cheating.
But again...I would definitely say that you are the person that posted on Yahoo so no one would think you were cheating....especially after seeing the abuse being done here.
I, too, have posted questions on Yahoo. But I have never posted them here either. LOL Funny, we both think the same to post more serious questions here. :)
Thank for throwing that in here. It helped me to clarify my position. :D

I use a different name on yahoo answers and have posted the same questions on here but I varied them a bit. I dont think its cheating, I used mylot mainly as a chatroom with more adults answering and monetary benefits. Now if someone else posted mine word for word from Yahoo, then I would get upset. I would also expose them, but I havent seen any on here yet.

That is a good point about noting that you posted it elsewhere. I hadn't thought about that. It makes sense. Sometimes the obvious eludes me, lol. I think I post the more serious things here because there is more of a "discussion" type atmosphere, whereas on Yahoo, once you post, you really can't respond to the things that people wrote as easily, and therefore can't clarify if someone is unsure about what you mean. That and there is a huge population of 13 year olds "playing" on there. That kind of takes away from the seriousness of the site.

Actually I'm not sure if its copyrighted or not. It would be one of those areas that would have to be checked into. It's a grey area.
That being said though I think it is still wrong to copy and paste one in from another forum. Now it's one thing for a writer to post one there and at this one, I could see that happening and be ok. For example you posting this discussion here as well as Yahoo Q&A. It's when you are posting someone else's that it isn't right. If I saw one like that i'd let mylot know. I think they'd want to. Now the question comes in, did they copy and paste from there or from here? Where did the original post come from especially if they have the same dates it makes it hard to tell.

I agree...if it is your own discussion from a different forum, then great! Why not use it here. What I am speaking of though is I have seen user(s) post several discussions from many different people from past posts that received a lot of responses. I think if one can see that the user(s) are getting it from several different users off a different forum, that is wrong.

Copying and pasting any response is for me considered 'cheating' you are still using someone else's response whether it's from this site or another, it's still plaigerism. But the trouble is how do you know it has been copied and pasted from another site? I don't use Yahoo Q&A myself so how am I to know, unless I am reliably informed that this person has deliberately cheated.

I definitely think that it is still cheating. They are still stealing the thoughts and the work of somebody else and using them to make money on other sites. Unless they read a discussion somewhere else and get a good idea for a discussion and put a little bit of work into making it their own, which I guess would be OK. I don't know if I would go so far as to be reporting it as abuse here; I think that I would just let it play itself out, and hope that the forums are able to catch on and reprimand them.
If it were my own discussion, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to post it on other forums, but then again it would be my own work that I was using.

I think it is cheating. People should be writing their own thoughts, not copying from another site whether or not it is copyright protected.

I think it's cheating. Unless of course, it's your own discussion, that's different, you can do what you like. I don't think you should pass things off as your own though, I think it's cheating, and the cheaters should be outed.

I can't quite understand why anyone simply copies and pastes from anywhere .. unless it's technical info or an article that needs precise wording ..
I did an experiment when I first came here .. copy and paste chunks from another site or write my own few sentences ...
To my surprise it was MUCH quicker to just write a few words .. as it took me twice as long to find a suitable paragraph to copy and paste .. by the time I had finished the copy and paste I would have been done and dusted with my own words ...
I also wouldn't want other peoples words seeming to come from me .. I may not be as erudite as some folks .. but my own points of view are important to me and I do try to get them across as best I can ..
Surely it's better to read what others have put and then just write your own version of the info .. takes no extra time and no risk of being banned ...

Well put Patootie.
I also think that when we post discussions in our own words, we are also to read some of that person's personality.
I enjoy the many different writing styles on here! :)

funny this topic discussion was raised. I know eventually and sooner or later someone would. I was actually thinking about trying to get some ideas about discussion topics from yahoo answers. and I also thought what i just copy one's questions there. but i hesitated. that wouldn't be right. but i think just getting the idea would not be bad.
copy and pasting it word for word is considered plagiarism and it is cheating. however, it's expected from a website that offers money for discussions. Money makes the world go round and now adds mylot to its list. Funny because Yahoo Answers also needs you to post in so you could earn points. Here in mylot you need to answer and post discussions to earn e-gold.. hopefully it will turn into money.

I think that taking another's person work without crediting them is cheating. If that is taking it from another forum, reading it in a book, whatever... It is cheating, and plagurism. I know that these things aren't copyrighted, but they are still the ideas of another person, and they really deserve credit for their work.

My point exactly! :)
If it is someone else's work and even if it is not copyrighted, it is still stealing the words from that other person. Plagiarism!

Sheesh there you go, i didnt even think of that lol. Thats probably why i dont have hundreds of discussions posted, I just dont have all that time so when i have something on my mind or want to share something i come here, why not, i also make money at the same time hehe. Good point though, I would hope that other people arent just cutting and pasting other peoples stuff, i wouldnt call it cheating, id call it sad. Keep up the good work everyone :)

I would too!!!
The people that the discussions from Yahoo could very well join myLot.
And if they knew that was something they had written, they would be very upset!
I would! Great point Patootie!

I fully agree with you.. this is cheating pure and simple. When someone writes something they put their time, effort, and thoughts into doing so. People who choose not to do this; instead copying others are lazy and obviously can't think enough by themselves to come up with answers.
The governement says that as soon as something is done it is copyrighted. Applying for a copyright is further protection in case someone does copy your work - gives you proof that you did it 'first'. So technically as soon as I write this it is copyrighted regardless of the fact that it is in a forum.
If I were you and knew who these people copying were I would report them!!!

OH I forgot to add.....
If the person copying says where he/she got the piece then they are not cheating. Problem is that most people who copy and paste don't give the original author any credit.

I know that I reposted a set of questions - The Friday Fives - from livejournal each week, which I don't know if its the same or not. But I don't see really anything wrong with it especially if they state its from it.

I think survey questions would fall along the same lines of jokes or emails.
Posting from Yahoo Q&A as a copy and paste, the person is taking what another person thought out to write. Their words. Their thoughts and or feelings.
I don't think jokes, survey question, get to know you questions, or emails would be considered the same because those are written to share with others.
That person's discussion on another forum is meant to be their thought.

I had actually wondered about this. I won't name names, but I have seen some people posting things in the last few days that looked more like they were tips from some kind of a Q&A site than something they had written, and I wondered if these were their own tips that they had been writing for another site like Daytipper, or Yahoo Q&A, or if they were posting other people's works. I really do feel that it is cheating if you take words from someone else, no matter where you get those words from. If they are your own words that you wrote on another site, fine. That is why I wouldn't want to accuse anyone here of something, since I did not know if they were posting their own articles/tips from another site. I would rather give someone the benefit of the doubt first! ^_^

I own many YAHOO! groups and anyone who takes a 'quote-unquote' from any area in YAHOO!and apaste it somewhere else in YAHOO!can not only be banned from that group but also from YAHOO!.....we had 1 such cheater in one of my soap groups and after collecting the evidnce we needed,we submitted it to YAHOO!who emailed us back letting us know that she had been banned, mind you,we gave this person many, many warnings about what we were doing but they just didn't care.....since than, she has tried 3 different times to join back up but YAHOO!caught her everytime and let us know at the time.....she did manage to get an account through her local library and rejoined my group once more but the minute we figured out who she was,we let YAHOO! know and once again she was gone.....yes,it is considered taking the thoughts and opinions of someone else and reposting them as your own.....one simple word sums it up.....CHEATING!

I think it is completely illegal and people would at least get reprimanded if not banned by Mylot. It's cheating, in my book.
