eating to much before getting to bed, physical illnessm and stress causes nightmares. Follow this tips it might help you avoid them.
Step 1: Try to relax before bedtime. Take a hot bath and to mild stretching exercises.
Step 2: Clear your mind of worries.
Step 3: Avoid watching horror movies right before bed
Step 4: Eat a light snack such as milk or yogurt they contain calcium and tryptophan, which can have a relaxing effect.
Step 5: Avoid fatty and spicy foods, which could cause a gas inside your stomach.
I hope this tips can help you turn your nightmares into sweet dreams :D

Hi Baby Nel, I had the same problem back in college. I was always afraid to go to sleep because when I wake up I can't move and if I go back to sleep I feel that it's gonna be my last day. And this is what I observed.
In the dorm there was scarcity of water so I don't drink enough. Too bad. It causes me that scary immobile state when I just woke up and can't stand. Drink plenty of water before hitting your pillow with your head. Don't forget this. Also bring a pitcher of water next to your bed so when you wake up you can just reach for it and have a sip. Hopefully this will help.
