I would say to just come out with it and ask. If you are real good friends the worse she can say is No. And that I would think would come from being afraid to lose the actual friendship if things don't work out.

Talk to your friend and give a little of hints DOnt approach directly as you may risk your friendship IF the person gives you a positive response then you know you can ask him/her out else just continue with a healthy friendship you dont wana lose him/her!
