Exracers and the canter lead

I have an exracer, who although has been off the track a long time, still has issues with picking up the right canter lead. Even though she is asked to bend and balance herself into the corners, she still has difficulty. I am thinking of asking her through the shoulder-in now, as it may make it more difficult to pick up the wrong one. I know that she can canter on it, because she will do so on the lunge (provided she is balanced in the change from trot). I have tried to evenly develop her muscles, and when she does get it (rare!) she has no trouble maintaining it. Has anyone had similar issues? I would appreciate some help sorting out the problem. Thanks :)

I would first make sure she is not in any sort of pain anywhere. Probably a thorough lameness exam and xrays, etc. Another option to consider is an equine chiropractor. She may be "out" somewhere. That will affect movement. If nothing turns up in these physical exams then I would continue trying different things to figure out what her key is. Maybe she's not understanding what you're asking? Another idea - she may be very one sided and maybe that's what the problem is? Hope some of these suggestions help.
