I am looking to find a serious way to get my dog to stop barking when he has to wait outside store or kindergarten when we are out on errands. He is still young, five months old, so i dont expect him to get the point immediately. What worked for you? What ideas do you have to make the dog understand hes not left forever, he just has to wait abit? Any hints or tips appreciated. Thanks.

Dogs can't understand that we are coming back, that's why they are just as happy to see us when we've been gone five minutes as they are when we've been gone all day! You can train a dog not to bark by distracting him with a treat when he starts barking, repeat the word "quiet" (or whatever command you want, always the same word) as he is eating the treat, and praise him for being quiet. It takes time and consistency to train a dog properly. Eventually he will learn "quiet" without being offered the treat.

Thank you for replying. This was helpful. Im going to try out this. I know it takes time getting the dog to understand. We are still working on sit, without the treat.
