A shopper bought a single item at each of three successive stalls in the covered market. Each time she spent 2/3 of what sha had and yet at the end she still had 50p left for her bus fare home. How much had she started off with??

Not exactly sure what 50p is .... I work in either canadian or US currency, but to simplify ... Work backwards. If she had 50p left, backup one shop from there. 3rd shop - spent 2/3 her money .. she started at this point with 50p, so before she made her purchase at this stall, she had 150p ... since 2/3's of that would be the 50p she had left afterwards. 2nd shop - spent 2/3 her money .. she started at this point with 150p, so before she made her purchase at this stall, she had 450p ... since 2/3's of that would be the 150p she entered stall the 3rd shop with. 1st shop - spent 2/3 her money ... she started at this point with 450p, so before she made her purchase at this stall, she had 1350p ... since 2/3's of that would be the 450p she entered the 2nd shop with. So she began the day with 1350p, however much that is in total in that currency.
