Can we please get rid of the hate?

As I surf the internet and read about things I care about, there are always comments from people that are negative and often times hateful. It seems impossible for people to actually stick to the facts when discussing a topic. It always gets so personal, people will even make things up to prove their point. I just don't get it. When you make something up, or refuse to give your source, you are discrediting yourself. Is anyone else tired of this? What can we do to better keep an open mind, and encourage others to do so?
