How many cats is too many cats?

I have two cats myself (Fluffy and Notso Fluffy), but I have been told that this is two too many by my boyfriend. I remember thinking when I adopted them that two was my limit, otherwise people might start mistaking me for a crazy old cat lady (even though I am 27).
I have always had one or two cats my whole life. I like having the two now, because they keep each other company when I am at work.
How many cats is too many cats for a two bedroom apartment? How many cats is too many cats in general? I'm interested in knowing how people end up with 70 cats without knowing that's too much.

I think two is about right in a two-bedroomed apartment, though it would depend on if you have a garden, and if you let them out or not. I have 5 cats, though my house is quite large, and I have a big garden too, and they all go out whenever they want. I only ever had two, - as you say, I think two is a nice number to play together, and keep each other company, - but I do voluntary work for a Cat Charity, and my others were all cruelty cases, and I am a sucker for a pair of pleading feline eyes, so I ended up with the number I have! At one stage I had 6, but one of them was run over last year:-((

I actually got my kitties from a foster family to the animal shelter in my town! Mine were not brothers, but they thought they were so the foster family asked that they be kept together. I happily adopted both, and was so greatful that someone took good care of them before the were mine. You're doing good work!

Depends on how big your place is. We have around 1,000 Sqft and two cats is enough. If we were in a bigger house we would be able to add another cat. It is good to own more than one cat at a time because they keep each other company.

Agreed! We are at 1,400 sqft and I think two is enough for that space (though I could always find room for a third). My two are brothers from different mothers, I could never seperate them. They would have been sad if they went to different homes.

We could probably squeeze one more, but we have 3 people, 3 fish tanks, and a bird cage on top of all of our furniture in our 2 bdrm 2 bath apartment. The one sad thing was when we did adopt our cats, there were 3 from the litter. We just couldn't take the other little one, but thankfully they did have an owner lined up for her.

I think it depends on the person, the size of their place, and their finances. Lets face it a lot of cats cost a lot of money. Two cats though is fairly common. I know many who have two since they want the one to have a companion. With a two bedroom apartment 2 is fine and not a problem. It sounds more like your boyfriend doesn't like cats. Just remember this old saying and tell him it, "he who dislikes the cat, was in his former life a rat" :)

I think 3 cats would be max for a 2 bedroom place. I had 5 when I lived in a 6 bedroom house with my sister. We had to use 2 litter boxes due to congestion. :) and 2 sep places for them to eat since we had 2 cats that didn't get along. We loved them all as if they were our kids but one of the cats would get very jealous if he didn't get all the attention. He'd get depressed and poop in all the wrong places during the night. Poor guy needed so much tlc. So what I'm saying is make sure when you do have the cats you want that each gets enough attention they need.

I think 2 cats is fine. I have 5 and that is my limit. It takes a lot of time to give each cat the petting and attention they each need. Each person has to decide for themselves how many is too many. But I believe if you can't give each cat the one on one attention of petting them and spending quality time with them, you have too many.
I have seen on Animal Precinct and other shows like that that when people have a lot of cats or dogs for that matter, the cats become feral and fearful of humans because they don't get the human touch and attention they need. Dogs become fearful of humans, also.

I love cats so much! I have a friend who has 22 cats, she has a big house with a big garden where they can run and play. I have just 2 cats, but I dream a house with 20-30 cats...

I don't think 2 cats is too many. I say 3 is a limit. I think if you go past that they may get stinky. Yeah, how do people end up with sooo many cats sometimes. Especially when they are cat lovers but with that many its impossible to keep them clean.

That's really funny. Right now my wife and i only have one cat, Mao, but he's big enough for two. he weighs twenty pounds and he's a big fat fluffy orange tiger cat. Which always makes us laugh, because our dog is a tiny fluffy 6 pounds. However, at one time we had 3 cats before we moved 'cross country. I wouldn't recommend 70, but however many you feel you can take care of without neglecting, is how many you need. I think two is a good number, because they can keep each other company. If you're boyfriend doesn't like your cats...well. He'll need to get over it, if you've had cats your whole life, why should you give them up now?

We have three cats, all shelter rescues. I believe our city has a law limiting the number of cats any one person can own at a given time to six (at least legally, I'm sure there are people who exceed that). I think it is up to you how many you can afford, would want to look after etc. Two sounds like a good number to me. Best wishes!

First of all, I love that you named one "Notso Fluffy" reminds me of a time when we had two guys at work with the same name, the one that was there longer was "Dave" the second Dave was called "the other one".
...but back to your question...
I think a lot of the "too many cats" equation depends on the person's lifestyle and the cats personalities, so it changes from one situation to the next. But I have to say that I would think that some one who had more than 5 or 6 in their house was a little "touched" so to speak. But I also believe that, as long as they can properly care for and socialize all their cats, you should be able to own as many as you want.
BTW, my boyfriend was a cat-hater before he met me. He still doesn't like cats in general, but he does like my cat now.

I have 2 cats too. Sylvester and Izzy. I think that 2 cats are enough unless you have a larger house.
