Does anyone have tips on getting started in the music business?

I am 22, and I've been singing since as far back as I can remember, since 5th grade school-wise. Everyone has always said that I have a fantastic voice. I can sing country and Evanescence-style rock. I write my own lyrics, and I have a friend from the band I'm in that helps me put the music to my songs. I write more in the style of Evanescence, too, somewhat dark and emotional. Those who have heard my first finished song say it's very good. The recording just needs a little refining. Anyway, I am in a band, so my voice will get some exposure once we start playing out, but the band isn't really doing anything in the style I write in, which is why I sing Evanescence and have started writing my own stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions about breaking into the music/recording business? And my fiance is also a singer, and pretty damn good, so if there are any rock bands around in our local area (Newport News, VA area) that are looking for a singer, let me know.
