I was wondering if there are any crafters here. I do general crafting and LOVE working with polymer clay. What kind of crafts do you do? Do any of you work with polymer clay??

I do alot of different types of crafts, painting, stencils, etc. I like to create and love to teach my children different way's of making stuff. I have alway's enjoyed doing crafts and sewing. I would like to get into the polymer clay and even ceramics but have not because of the unknowing more than anything. I would like to know how the clay works in that do you bake it or just let it set and dry and does it become hard like ceramis, is it paintable. As you see there are alot of questions. If you don't mind giving me some tips I would appreciate it.

Polymer clay is awesome! It bakes right in your oven. Comes in many colors. And yes if you want to you can paint it. You can use it with gold leaf .... oh so many things!!

I mostly crochet and knit. I usually make things for my kids like scarves, shoes, and hats. I also make little crocheted animals. My middle child is especially into skulls, wristbands and I would guess skater stuff. I've made her a wrist cuff that's black on one side and pink on the other with a skull on it out of felt. I also doctored a pair of plain white shoes for her with a skull applique and black 3-d dimensional paint.

I crochet and sew but my main love being polymer clay. I make beads, jewlery, flowers, I have found a cool way to make rings but haven't had the time to really work with it. I have made boxes for friends when they have babies for the keepsakes. My pens sell very well and go great when paired with a bookmark. I had a girl buy a pen and a bookmark for her teacher. my favorite polymer clay is translucent clay because I make my own colors by adding inclusions and the depth of the piece when finished is awsome.

I also hate sanding, I am allergic to the dust and my skin blisters. My husband, the sweet dear man he is, does most of my sanding for me.

Oh bless his heart! Did you know that if you use wet dry sandpaper and sand under water the dust never flies?

Would love to see your work! It is such an addictive medium isn't it?? I just hate having to sand things. I haven't gotten good enough not to need to *sigh*.

I love crafting, especially out of recycled stuff. I make sculptures and weave beads into cloth, I make life-sized fairy wings and braided rugs, I do anything that catches my inspiration. I have yet to use polymer clay simply because the cost is prohibitive down here for kiln use.

There are also great web sites for buying the clay itself and if you find the right one you can save a bundle. I personally use a great site and regularly can get double the clay for the same price as going to the store even with shipping. If you really want a good deal sometimes ebay has some great auctions with not bad shipping. my problem with ebay is the sellers price in shipping is normally more then my regular seller is.

I haven't found a site yet that can beat what I buy clay for. Can you tell me? (I don't know if you are allowed to post it here or if you have to send it to me by message or what. I don't want to break the rules.)

I remember seeing a book on polymer clay flowers and had to buy the book because they were just beautiful! I then invested in some of the things I would need but just couldn't master it to my satisfaction. I do just about every other kind of crafting though? (Noticed your avitar; do you collect paperweights?)

No that's not a paperweight. It is a Leigh rose cane made of polymer clay. That was right after I made it before I reduced it.

So sorry about your hands. Maybe some polymer clay would be helpful (or just modeling clay) as you can just squeeze it and knead it - it might help your hands. I know they gave my mom some kind of clay years ago when she had a pinched nerve in her shoulder to excercise her hand. They also gave some to my sister in law after her stroke. You are so right - we all need something to help us relax!

One thing should be noted for those who have never used polymer clay. Follow the manufactures cooking instructions very closely and DO NOT BURN IT. Polymer clay in non toxic but if burnt will release toxic gases. IF YOU BURN IT, get all children and pets out of the house or as far from the problem area as possible and ventilate the house well. Once the gases are gone clean your oven very well before using it again. If you follow the directions and pay attention when baking you will have lots of fun and make some great items and memories.

Your welcome. It is very easy to burn clay, I know I have done it several times. Each time my 4 cats, 3 dogs, and son have to pack off to my friends house until the fumes clear and I clean up the mess. Not a lot of fun, and you loss the pieces you just worked so hard to create.

I do a lot of different crafts. With polymer clay I've made an almost life sized puppet head. I've made pendants and beads and kitty ears and horns. I've make incense burners. I need to make some Sculpey doll faces for art dolls. I bought the stuff but then got distracted with other projects and work.

I am getting stuff together to starat doing more with poly clays with an eye toward selling a few finished prodcuts by the end of summer. I am totally inspired by some of the things I see on DIY network and starting to think about using polymer clays to create things like those tile collages using polymer clay for the tiling effect and carving the desing in before baking. Has to be cheaper and faster than actually breaking up porcelain and other things to create the collage. I would probably carve a sheet, bake it, and then apply grout as if it is actual tile, after painting with acrylic paint and coating the raise tile-like areas with and acrylic sealer of some sort. I got satred because I wante to decorate my own hairsticks but didn't want to pay for fancy beads. I am such a tight wad!

I would be interested in polymer clay. I have never worked with it. I have been into beading and making jewelry with beads. Some people make their own nead with great designs. Some people have made beautiful things out of glass and made the glass themselves. I find all of that stuff interesting, and fun. I put my hobby on hold while the holidays were here, and still haven't had time to get back into it. I love crafts. They are very theraputic and you can do them with people of all ages.

I've never heard of polymer clay but it sounds interesting. I crochet, oil paint and do charcols a little, and silk flower arrangments. I've also done needlepoint and latch hook but not for some time.

I've done a bit of just about everything you mentioned. You should get yourself a block of polymer clay as it is nice to have just to squeeze the dickens out of when stressed. Would you be interested in a clay Prayer bottle?

I do a lot of crafting. This is mainly because I like to save money by making my own things (like cards) and because I like to keep myself busy when I watch TV at night. Knitting while you watch a movie makes you feel so mcuh more productive than just sitting there and watching the tv alone. Some of the crafts I do include embroidery, making my own cards with stamps, jewelry making, knitting, needle felting, and a whole bunch of other things I can't think of right now. Most of the time I will either see something online or at a store and think to myself "hey, I could do that" and then kinda make things up from there. There was even a time when I did a little sewing, but in the end, I don't think that one's really my thing.

You sound very much like me. I actually got into crafting cause we were flat broke (in fact it was right before we became homeless) and I wanted to give Christmas gifts to my family members. I asked for a gift certificate for a craft store for my birthday and used that money to buy materials to make gifts. It is now a holiday tradition and makes me feel good when people seem excited to find out what they are getting this year! Wow you do an assortment of things. I dont do any of the ones you said LOL. There sure are a lot of crafts out there aren't there??

I learned when i was 16 and i love the woman that tought me how to do this. My mother-in-law nitts but i have no idea how to do this. I kinda wish that some people would be intrested in buying some of my blankets. I live where it gets very cold in the winter time and i make these blankets very thick. I have never tried working with polymer clay, but it sounds like fun. I mostly just crochet a lot, and lately I've been trying to get into scrapbooking. My husband is in the military and is away on a deployment, so I thought it might be nice to surprise him with a scrapbook of his army career to date when he gets home! I love crafting, but I'd like to try out some more new things!

I never thought I would be a crafter as I have never seen myslef as "crafty", but I am a now a glorified craftster! I scrapbook and have turned it into a freelane job working for magazines and product manufacturers. I also took up knitting not too long ago and I love that as well. I just wish I had more time for it.
