I just read that a study done at Penn State University say that the smarter you are the more crankier you will be. And that people who are over 60 years old and with an above average intelligance level will be more disagreeable.
No wonder I'm always cranky.
What do you think about that. Are you cranky?

Well I dont know what there opinion of cranky is, could it just be people are more opinionated the older they get? I have heard some women say things like they dont want to date guys with baggage??? Umm isnt baggage part of life? Everyone typically learns things and does have feeligns about certain things as they get older if we were as blind as we were when we were younger doesnt that mean we havent gained anything through years? Very few people achieve a zen like state as they get older most of us do tend to be more solid in our convictions the older we get. But to answer your question yes I have been told that I am cranky...lol. Although there are others that would use alot different words than cranky.

When women say baggage they are not referring to feelings, opinions or ideas. It means ex-wives and children. Physical baggage. I have a boyfriend who has a child with an ex-lover and it's major baggage. Because it mean he's still attached to her in some way and I am constantly competing against that.

I argree that is the typical meaning of baggage, but some include concepts and hangups as being baggage.

OK, so why are the more intelligent more cranky? Speculation on my part says that we think about more. The repercussions of our actions, how society behaves, the neverending list of stuff I have to do. I wonder if these people of above average intelligence aren't happy because they're seeking something greater out of life. Something greater than themselves, and they haven't found it yet. Or maybe they're pissed at everyone else 'cause the less intelligent have trouble keeping up.

Those are all great possibilities. But the study also said something about the elderly smart. So maybe it's because they were so capable at a young age that they are more frustrated that they can't do the same things anymore. My grandfather was borderline genius and it frustrates him now that his mind has gone, or is going.

wow...so i get to look forward to being 60 and cranky. I'm going to try and remember this when i'm 60...and change the trend. If I can remember anything at all by then...

That's really interesting! I try not to be cranky, but I can be a pretty cantankerous person sometimes. I guess my temper just has a short fuse. And, coincidentally (or maybe not coincidence!) I do have a higher-than-average IQ. So does my father (he classifies as genius), and he's pretty cranky too.

You and your father fit right into the study. My grandfather is a crumudgeon and he's brilliant. Or was back in his day. the only man I know in his eighties who got a dual masters degree in mathematics and biochemistry. As far as I am concerned...he has the right to be cranky now.

Hey let me stack this up against your educated relatives. I am 72 and only worked 18 months of my entire life and live better than 99 percent of the people in the world. Is this a sign of genius ? no, it is the result of incredible blind luck. Genius and talent can't hold a candle to blind luck. But I must admit I am incredibly cranky. Have a good day you tickled my humor bone and that is all and old fart can ask for.

Thats really interesting! I am an extremely cranky person, and I have a Mensan IQ. That explains a lot! Now, if anyone tells me to stop being so cranky, I can tell them its just me expressing my genius. HAHA. I can't wait to be a difficult old person. I'm going to scream at teenagers and say very inappropriate things all the time. x

nicolec, thankyou, thankyou, after reading your post my wife commented that I must have the highest IQ on the planet. She also said that since I am already 72 I will have a chance to become the smartest man in the universe.

That is very interesting...I find the older I'm getting, the crankier I seem to also get, although maybe lately it's due to a lack of sleep rather than any gain in intelligence. Very interesting though - I never would have connected the two.

LoL. I tend to be cranky a lot. Especially in the mornings. I wonder if I'll be a cranky, disagreeable old woman. I can partially see it.

Oh my goodness! And I thought it was a BAD thing to be cranky, now I find I'm just showing off my intelligence? And I'm not even 60 yet! I don't know about the study, haven't read it, but I've seen some pretty disagreeable people in my time, and I never thought of them as extra intelligent, just kinda normal. Cranky, but normal.

I'm usually pretty easygoing and flexible, but if I wanted to be cranky I have several reasons that I could be cranky. I just choose not to be because I don't like hanging around with my dad since he's gotten older and more cranky. It really can bring people down, being cranky all the time about every little thing.
hmmm... maybe I'm not as smart as I had previously thought.:)

hohohooo! now that's why my brother has a very short fuse... my eldest brother also gets cranky over small things... me? well i find myself to be easily irritated too and get angry at some things easily... so maybe that's why... i believe we (siblings) all are smart in one way/area.
This is such a happy thing to learn about. haha.
