What exactly are they, and what do you do about it if you get them? What remedy works best for you?

Most shin splits are actually microscopic fractures in your bone. Over time they become calcified (filled with calcium) and your bone heals stronger than before. I had shin splints for the first year that I ran, but never after that. Over time, your body will repair the fractures. Some martial artists intentionally fracture their bones by smashing them into metal poles simply because they will heal stronger (I am not endorsing this).
While you can't "cure" shin splints, (short of stopping running, but that's completely unnecessary) you can help the pain by:
Buying shoes that fit your foot type and have lots of cushioning.
Running only on dirt, trails, and grass.
AVOID ASPHALT AND CONCRETE!
Mainly, just have patience and eventually they'll go away.
