No, it's not necessary... it's commercialised! I think it far better to show or tell the one you love your feelings every day. Valentine's Day comes from the old traditions and yes, you can celebrate it, but you don't need to spend vast amounts of money to do so. A Knight and His Lady In the Middle Ages, a knight often wore a token from his lady when he fought in a tournament or rode into battle. The token was sometimes a ribbon, a handkerchief, or a piece of lace. Today, many Valentine's Day gifts and cards are trimmed with ribbons, lace, and other delicate fabrics. Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve…Literally Couples today often share certain pieces of clothing, such as sweaters, scarves and jackets, but back in the Middle Ages, this was not so (it would have been quite strange to see men outside of the theatre wearing women's clothes). Instead, clothes were often made with detachable sleeves. This made it convenient to wash, but it also allowed lovers to exchange sleeves and eventually coined the phrase, "Wearing your heart on your sleeve." Love Is Blind Cupid was known to make people fall in love by shooting them with his arrows, but he often shot his arrows for no reason at all. In Greek and Roman mythology, Cupid (or Eros in Greek mythology) was the cause of many unlikely unions, hence the saying "Love is blind." There are some of your traditions. There are many more but just to elaborate a bit, I typed these few in. Have a great Valentine's Day. :-)
