Depression a disease?

After reading a lot of posts here and on other websites, predominantly what people seem to think cures their depression is just staying busy. I have to agree there. But with that said... is depression even really a disease or health issue? What if it's just the result of, forgive me for saying so, being lazy?

Sadness, hopelessness and boredom can be "cured" by staying busy. Depression is a medical condition. It is caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain. The only way to cure a neurological problem like depression is with therapy and/or medication. There is no "quick fix" for depression like there is for sadness, hopelessness and boredom. What many people call depression is not true depression and that is why people think that it is the same as being lazy. It is very, very different.

I don't think staying busy cures depression. It just takes your mind off of it some. That can be dangerous if you're not getting any other treatment because then if you get really bad symptoms they seems to just come on from nowhere and you are blindsided. At least that's been my experience. Depression has physical as well as psychological repurcussions and ignoring it or keeping busy will only help so much.

I don't think depression is ever the result of being lazy. It is a medical condition in which the brain is lacking seratonin. I do believe we can go through times in our life when we are feeling blue because we are stuck in a rut (or being lazy) but this is not actually depression. Depression is something which must be treated as it affects so many people not only the one suffering from it. However, please don't quote me as this is just my own personal opinion.

every one gets lonely and they get over it after a couple of days or so. but there are also those who are paralyzed with this illness. i think you are confusing the two. yes, i admit, i do get lazy but i don't think that's what caused my depression. i also know a lot of people who are productive members of society and yet they still suffer from this illness.
