There are also careers for artists in the mental health field. Art-making can have a powerfully healing effect on a person, as anyone who has ever taken part in the process of creating a piece of art, whether it be visual, musical, written, etc., knows. I know many people who are artists and have also pursued careers as art therapits, music therapists, dance/movement therapists, or drama therapits. It is a way for artists to create their own art and give back to the community by helping others express themselves through art.

Why yes, yes I do. There are great masters programs at NYU, Pratt, and School of Visual Arts (all 3 in Manhattan), as well as a program on Long Island at Hofstra University, a program in New Rochelle, NY at the College of New Rochelle, and a program in NJ at Caldwell College of NJ. I'm sure there are plenty of others but I can't recall more at the moment. There are also a few undergraduate programs in the creative arts therapies, but one needs a masters in the subject to practice, so I'd recommend getting an undergraduate art (music, drama, dance, etc.) or psychology degree and then going for your masters later.

It depends my friend,Artists have each own category. My line as an Artist and a Fashion Designer is my way of earning. This is my profession and I loved it because this is my life.In landscape painting the income comes so slow,so I need to concentrate in Fashion Designing,Creating handicrafts designs is also in demand,so in which way there is an income,I need to be there.

I love art, it's my favourite passion.
It would be very nice to live exercising the profession of art, but here in Italy it's too hard, I attend the atelier of two artists who paint wonderful pictures, and they can hardly live with money of us students.
Compliments for people who can live only of his/her own art.

sigh that is a question for the ages.
I guess if your only thinking of it as a profession then you can always try and work in commercial art, however if you want to peruse your own vision, then it becomes more difficult.
Yes you can make art a profession, but often you HAVE to "Do what you have to do to do what you WANT to do."
so you may have to do some sucky job to be able to afford to make the art your heart leads you to make.

I think people can earn their living through their art, but that depends on how you define art. Actors and musicians are some of the worlds most powerful people and they definitely earn through that. Writers, graphic artists, fashion designers, dancers, directors... They all live doing the thing they love to do most. Of course the money isn't as stable and the job isn't as secured as say, an accountant and the pay takes a whole lot more to earn, but I guess that is the price to pay.
Any which way, I think making someone's passion their profession reaps their own rewards and pays off with more than cash.
