Weight Gain Due To Antidepressant Use

July 5, 2006 12:35pm CST
Today, I watched an infomercial about the Nutrisystem Plan. I went on-line and it appears that this is a safe and effective progam that promotes a healthy eating regimen. However, until recently, I have been able to maintain a healthy weight and size. Approximately one year ago, I was placed on Lexapro, an antidepressant whose side effetcs are listed as weight gain. Since this Rx, I have gained 10-15 lbs. I am 41 y/o and pre-menopausal. Is it possible that Nutrisystem could help with weight management under these conditions? Or perhaps this is just what I have to live with due to my depression and menopause?

You don't have to just live with weight gain. Try just addidng some exercise to your daily routine. Do you eat relatively healthy?

I would not recommend a diet like Nutrosystem for what you are looking for. Nutrosystem is a temporary problem solver to a life long problem. What you need to do is alter your diet for the long term - cut down on sweets and soda, drink more water, cut down on portion sizes, and eat more fruits and veggies. With menopause and anti depressants, their is some weight gain, but if you modify your lifestyle to eat healthier and exercise (even if it is walking around the mall for 40 minutes twice a week) you will loose the weight. If you drink a lot of soda and switch to water, you will definitely see a big difference quick. My ex-husband had some weight gain while on anti-depressants, but with adding exercise to his daily routine he worked the weight off and ended up in much better shape. When my mom went through menopause she had a weight gain. Come to find out she has a thyroid problem that came with the on-set of menopause. You may want to consider having your thyroid checked out (even if this does not run in your family, no one else in my family has ever had a thyroid issue).

This is an old discussion I see .. but before I wopuld undertake anything of this kind of thing I think you should check with your doctor. Your Doctor was the one who would have prescribed the anti-depressant medication for you .. and would also be aware of the side effects of this particular medication. Best to talk to the doctor and find out how long you can be expected to stay on this particular medication .. whether it is possible to take another one without the weight gaining side effects etc. Good luck and hopefully you will give us some sort of response to let us know how you went, what you did to lose the weight and so on.
