Do you collect things? What do you collect and why?

I never think of myself as a collector. But then I remember that my every day dishes are actually antiques from the 50's. I found most of them at antiques stores, and finished off the pieces I neede by buying them on ebay. Other than that, I don't really collect anything. What do you collect, and why is it important to you?

I collect rubber ducks (it started with just one and got out of control and now I have tons!), things with the word "Believe" on them (the word itself has very personal meaning to me), and Willow Tree figurines. I just started collecting Willow Trees. I had said when I was a kid that when I had my own family I wanted to have a collection of them and for Christmas this year my mom got me my first piece, it is a pregnant woman and I am pregnant. :) It was the perfect first piece for me since I said I wanted it when I started a family and now I'm starting my family.
Ha! I'm so emotional right now (pregnancy hormones!) that now I'm actually crying...just like I did when I opened the gift!

Currently Hello Kitty. Not sure why, they just make me happy and if I add a new one from time to time then that is a grand thing. My Mother gets me something with Hello Kitty at Christmas time. I tend to buy movies too. Developing a collection of different horror ones. The challenge is to find the well made ones, although I do like the underground movies from time to time. Movies are something that helps to pass the time when there is nothing on regular television since that is all we have. No cable or satellite.

My grandmother started each of her grandchildren off with a collection one year. I think it was her way of taking the guesswork out of gift-buying for more than 27 grandkids. She chose thimbles for me and I've collected them ever since. My sister was given miniature bowl and pitcher sets and she still treasures them to this day. I think collections can be a wonderful way to remember someone.
I recently started collecting chefs for my kitchen. I have a variety of chef items, all different, as I'm not a matchy-matchy person. I enjoy browsing thrift stores and ebay to find the newest quirky chef to add to my collection. It's a lot of fun and doesn't cost very much money.

That's really sweet. Your grandmother sounds really thoughtful, even if she was doing it to make things easier for her - she created a memory for each of you and a legacy of her generosity.
