How can I train my dogs not to bark?

I have three very sweet dogs but when someone comes to the door, especially a stranger, they just bark and won't shut up. They know the command for quiet but they won't comply! It wouldn't be so hard with one dog, but I can't get my hands on all three at once! Any suggestions (no shock collars, I refuse!)

take a can, cleaned soup can works great... fill with a handful of pennies then tape shut with duct tape over the lid that had to be removed when opening. When the dogs bark shake it one or two times hard towards them and say NO. The loud sound stops them usually. I agree, no shock collars. Also, reward them when they get quiet, so have treats handy.

maybe you could try a rolled up news paper that sometimes work. when they bark if you can get to them just pop them slightly on the nose while telling them no or giving them the quiet command you do

Have you ever watched the show, the "Dog Whisperer" on cable (or satellite) - I don't know if it's on network television or not (thought I saw it on there once(?). That guy is just great and you could probably pick up great pointers from his show(s). Plus the show is very relaxing.. as he talks very 'restfully'. He explains what might be 'wrong' with a pet, why they act a certain way or won't be disciplined about something.. then he demonstrates.. I don't think he would ever use shock collars either!
I haven't seen it lately. I hopo it wasn't cancelled!

i was just about to mention the shock collar lol. i dont think it would do them any harm but if you dont approve then thats it out the window. my dogs do not bark. i cant think why but they are as quiet as mice. one is a boxer and the other is a yorkie. maybe its the breed. i do know there is no moe irritating noise than a crowd of dogs barking. well , maybe a crowd of kids figting lol.there is some new technique out but i cant remember it lol, helpful . trawl the net.
