How do you get your child to socialize with other kids?

My 20-month old daughter goes shy when in company of strangers. I know this is not unusual for kids but how do I get her to socialize with other kids?
I let her play with my neices and nephews but she'd rather play with me or with her dad.
Any advice?

The best way during day time, is to get other kids of slightly bigger ones and allow them to take care of the kid in your presence. During evening and night time, the members of the family should talk to the child, whether it understands or not. This will help the child to develop the social interaction.

that's what we've been doing.
as Vacant said, perhaps she's just at the stage when she prefers to play alongside kids and not with kids.
thanks for the advice, though :)

Hi, I see the same thing happened in my aunt's and brother's family. So i decided that my child will get the exposure to different people and different environment. As the child is young, all that she/he needs is the assurance that you will be there should anything happen to him/her.
My 2 kids (5 yrs & 3yrs) went to different playgrounds everyweek, go for gym, robotics, camps, picnics, etc. We have to show them how we greet and speak to other people. Just a smile or a hello to start with. Thank GOD, they had no separation anxiety when they started school. All the best!!

My twin daughters also used to get shy around strangers. But now, they love to be around other kids. Maybe you can enroll your child in a playgroup. That will give her more exposure and a chance to socialize.
