The 80's was the best for metallica i would say. I find some of their newer songs are just flung together and don't have great depth. Metallica's 80s style could probably be listned to by non metal listeners aswel as their songs have a great sense of meaning and are quite catchy unlike other metals bands of theier time..but don't get me wrong there are alot of great metal bands out there like metallica who had a great bunch of hits in the 80s

well i like anything from metallica but it comes to what i prefer.i like them back in the old days when they were heavy.and as a few guys said they have become soft.the last album St.Anger was something totally out of their style.but still you need to appreciate that they were willing to experiment with new sound.anyway i heard the next album they are making is going to sound like the one from Master of puppets.Man i cant wait for them to rock again.Rock on.Cheers.

The 80s was without a doubt Metallica's strongest period, at least in terms of song writing and innocation within the Metal scene.
In the 90s they got bigger commercial success, but their songs also turned a bit simpler in terms of technicality and complexity. To me Metallica seemed to experiment with a more rock oriented and commercial sound rather than developing their sound from the 80s. Some people might disagree.
As for the 00s, Metallica claim they have gone back to their roots, but I wouldn't agree. They have turned a bit more aggressive than their last few albums, but again I have the feeling they're not really going back to their roots but rather searching for a new sound that would benefit from the current popularity of metal in the mainstream.
So in conclusion, what Metallica did in the 80s was legendary! That would have to ve my favourite period!
