I think it is up to the parents to show different activities to their children, and spark an interest in the child. Many children are not motivated enough, and it is up to the parents to show them what is out there. It does not have to be sports, though that will teach them sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork. It can be scouts, church activities, art clubs or even playgroups.
I do not think you should let a child do nothing at all. I think that would do more harm than good.

I think children should be exposed to a lot of different things, sports, acting, drawing, etc. Not only does it help them in social ways and such, but it also gives them the opportunity to decide if they enjoy doing this type of thing. The more they are exposed to, the more they learn. I also think it's great for children to have extra curricular things they are involved in which they enjoy because it leaves them with less time to get into doing things that are wrong.

We decided to try the Girl Scouts with our girls. There are several reasons for this decision.
First, the girls work as a group, a team, but unlike a sports team, these girls get to bond.
Second, they have a belief in a higher being. I like that.
Third, they will have plenty of physical activity in hiking, camping, swimming, horseback riding, and others. If you sign up for basketball or dance, that's what you get, basketball or dance, no variety.
Finally, Girl Scouts also gives me, their mom, another outlet to spend time with my girls. In this capacity they see me more as a person, not their parent necessarily. I am the troop leader for six five year old girls and there was a bit of jealousy at first, but now that has calmed down significantly.
