I had my dog neutered....

My friend and I were having a discussion about dog aggression. We both own a pit bull. I just had my male neutered because I read and several people have told me that helps a dog with aggression issues. She disagrees and said its an old wive's tale. That neutering your dog makes him meaner. Which is true?

Neutering may help, but your best bet is a professional trainer. They will help train you and your dog in how to best control his aggression.

My dog hasn't really shown signs of aggression. I am just wondering how true it is that neutering helps with aggression or if it is a wive's tale. Thanks for your response.

Well put, she should check the humane society shelter or vet before paying good money. Just like there are bad breeders there are bad trainers. There's no reliable criteria for trainers.

There may be some truth t the statement as testosterone produced in the male gonads due act as agression stimulators. But neutering is an unlikely solution as it does not stop the production of the hormone. Only stops the semen from leavingthe genital pore. So I think that it basicall is an old wive'stale

I've seen it go both ways in dogs and cats. Some get more loving, some get meaner. There is no telling with it. Most though seem to get more loving at least in my experience. All I've had fixed were more loving afterwards anyways and I didn't have a problem with agression in them. Hope that helps.

Yes this helped. I have found that my dogs are more laid-back after being neutered. I just wanted to see others input. Thanks for yours.

Your friend is quite wrong. Much of the aggression in any male animal is as it is with human men, testosterone. All you have to do to get the truth is ask your vet. Training is the other way to minimize the aggression within a male dog. As with any male animal, they want to be the alpha male. That same behavior is exhibited towards humans as well. A dog has the brain capacity of a 1-2 year old child (cognitive reasoning). Ask around in your area for someplace you can go to train with your dog. Usually it doesn't cost anything or little if any. Good luck.

That's what I thought but she said her vet told her that it makes the dog meaner. But I have never heard that. Thanks.

I think you are right. I can't see why neutering would make a dog mean.
