I was trying to think of the worst book I ever read. I rarely read a book that I don't like. However, there is one book that stands out in memory like a sore thumb: The Lord of the Rings. I read it many years ago and still regret that I wasted my time on it.
What about you? What's the worst book you ever read that's loved by most people?

I agree, lethalsource, as soon as I read this thread name I knew that this was my answer. It was horribly written and so contrived I had to fight my way through it. The topics that it dicussed were interesting, but not within the context of this story that made no sense. If you had not read it, don't bother.

To me, it has to be the Bible. Not only are the stories horrendous and/or cheesy, but it's quite badly written (and it's not just a question of translation, as I've read it in English, French and German). I can't understand that some people consider this heap of nonsense such a great book.

i agree: the contradictions; the fact that it's been changed so much by so many throughout history; not to mention that it's 2,000 years old and hardly relavant other than for "love thy neighbor as thyself."

I'd have to say 'The Corrections', by Johnathon Franzen. It wasn't a terrible book, I just kept waitng for it to go somewhere....I was determined NOT to read it when it appeared on Oprah's reading group list. Then when a very arrogant Franzen wanted to yank his book from the Oprah list (because it was, according to him, too high-brow for Oprah's audience), I thought 'Hmm. This guy just shot himself in the foot, but he's obviously still got balls.' So, I read it in honor of his brazenness. Lesson learned: Don't believe the hype- from ANYONE!

That would be The Tommyknockers by Stephen King. I struggled all the way through it. I kept expecting it to get better and it didn't. It was bad all the way around. I know some who like it but not me. When it was over I was so dissapointed. It was a good thing it wasn't the first book I'd ever read by him because if it had I wouldn't have read another book. Thankfully I knew he could write much better then that.

LOL I know I have read few really terrible books in my day, but for the life of me I can't think of their titles. I must have blocked them from my mind they were so bad. I would know them if someone would mentioned their title. Chalk it up to old age I reckon.

I remember Sleeping With The Enemy.
A friend ranted on at how good it was, so she lent it to me.
Sadly, it was the biggest load of rubbish I had ever read.
Julia Roberts stared in the film of it and that was just as big a load of rubbish!!!

I had a lot of people recommend The Life of Pi. So, I gave it a try. I didn't even make it past the first few chapters. That is one of only a handful of books that I have never been able to finish. The Time Travelers Wife was another book I couldn't get into that everyone else seemed to like. But, at least I was able to finish that one. The Lord of the Rings, on the other hand, is a favorite of mine. :)
