Should I have knee replacement or continue in pain and be in wheel chair?

I need to have total knee replacement but I don't like surgery. If I don't have it I will be unable to move around in a very short time. I am very much involved with helping my family. In wheel chair I am afraid that I would not be able to continue helping like I need to. What do you think about surgery. Thanks

My sister is 71 years old and she had the same problem,so she chose to have that operascopic surgery, big mistake..so the pain got bad and she would have been in awheel chair too,but instead she chose a knee replacement. She is so happy she had that surgery, she does everything now,she shops ,takes care of her husband and even started working,so if i were you I would get the surgery...I worked in a beauty shop where a lot of women came in that had knee replacements, and I don,t know of any of them that are sorry, they are all very happy with the way their surgery turned out...No one wants to have surgery but it is the best way to go if you plan to live a constructed life..just get a good doctor and then afterward you will take therpy but after seeing such good results I would do it...I have seen very good results..You don,t want to be bound to a wheel chair,I know i wouldn't so by all means have the surgery...

Thank you for your incouragement. I am 76 and had in 2000 the operascopic surgery but it did not last but days. The Dr. says only complete replacement will do now and I believe it with so much pain. They wake me up during the night hurting.

How long did it take your sister to be able to do for herself after the surgery. I live by myself and I am concerned about burden on other people if it takes a long while to get about like cooking and driving.

If you have a good doctor then it shouldn't be too bad. I'd advise to get it so you can keep up with your family.

I think I have a very good Dr. and the hospital called and wanted me to come in for a class dealing with knee replacement. They said then I would know what to expect and how to take care of myself after surgery. Thanks to all for your post I appreciate it.
