Okay here's the deal, Im 24 and for schooling all I have is grade 12, and a level 3 first aid ticket (EMP). Right now I have a good job doing the first aid, pays well, more than id ever get at a min.wage job here in canada. In one month i bring home anywhere from 3000.00 - 5000.00, this is working pretty much the full month, 12 hours a day. But it's a very, very boring job, i basically sit in my truck all day waiting for someone to get hurt, and i have to deal with men all day, everyday, who work in the oilpatch. Ive been doing it for 3 yrs, and I would like too do something else. I really would like to get into helping animals, like work at the local animal shelter, but im just worried that i will go for the job change and bang, im not happy with the pay or i won't like the new job. How can I get over this and just try something new, or should I even bother changing jobs?

I doubt you would ever make that kind of money at an animal shelter with no formal training. What you should do is volunteer at the animal shelter first to see if you like it. While keeping your job, find out what is needed at the animal shelter and go back to school and get a vet degree. You can be a Vet Tech or other animal assistant with an Associates Degree and most places it takes less than a year to get.

You have to get at least one day off a month, if so use that day to volunteer. Or if you work night, help out 1-2 hours during the day. If you really want to do this, you will find time for it.

You shouldn't stay at a job you aren't happy with. My husband hates his job, but we can't really afford for him to start out at the bottom somewhere else. We have found a business that we're starting that will be his full-time job soon. He really enjoys it and it's making his "last" days at his job a bit more bearable knowing that it's going to be over soon.
I say go with what you're happy with!

Well first of all, I think that if you're that unhappy at your current job, you should find something you like. You're young and life is too short to be miserable at your job day after day for the rest of your life. But that being said, you can't expect to make the same amount of money at this new job as you're making at the job you've been at for the past three years. You might have to start out at a lower payrate, but personally I'd rather make slightly less and be happy at my job than make more and be miserable every day. Good luck with whatever you decide!
