Do you need to look at your keyboard while you type?

I've been using a computer at home for about 2 years now and I've used computers before that too. I've never learned to type though. My typing used to be incredibly slow, and although it's now a lot faster I still need to look at my keyboard while I type. A big problem with this is I have to lean down over my keyboard to type, this hurts my back if I do it for long periods.
Do you need to look at your keyboard to type or can you look at your screen when typing?

I may glance at the keyboard from time to time...but for the most part, I watch the screen when I am typing. This makes it easier to realize that I did a boo-boo.
Most of the time, I glance down to re-assure myself of my hand placement.
But if I think about it...I end up glancing more often. ha ha
So, I end up just trying to type without thinking about typing.
My son asked me the other day to type with my eyes closed. And I actually did it! LOL

Once in a while I still need to look at the kwyboard. I had typing classes before but I didn't pay much attention to it though. I didn't know that it would be that important in my everyday life especially I worked in the office. Overall, I typed okay! Nothing skillful...I think I am much more better with number keypads due to that I often enter numbers at work than words.

Oh yes, I have to look at my keyboard but I type pretty fast. I have timed myself and I can type 40 wpm looking at my keyboard. I have tried touch typing but it doesnt work well for me. My fingers just dont like to go where they need too. I know where all the keys are but for some reason its just easier to do it while looking at the keyboard.

Well i've had a lot of experiance with it so i do not need to look at the keyboard, learned that in college cause it was a pain in the butt to keep looking at the keyboard while trying to cite something then lose my spot in the book or whatever i'm using..But it's just something you pick up on slowly took me about 10 years or so to be able to do..
A good test that helped me was take a piece of paper or find one on the net of a keyboard and fill in the keys yourself this way you know where they are at in your head and the ones you miss just go back and practice..Or just get a typing program and just keeping typing while not looking at the keyboard you may make tons of mistakes but it's worth a shot..

I haven't taken typing classes and I type fast. A few years ago when I was in college, I had to submit various 100 page projects, all typed neatly and I did all the typing myself so that helped improve my speed. I've had many people ask me if I know typing when they see me typing so fast...well,I'm flattered! I look at the keyboard occasionally. Hmm well, I happened to type this response without having to look at the keyboard:)

Hi, I used to be slow too but since I practised my typing using Typing Tutor Platinum, my typing has improved! Now, I don't look at the keyboard and only at the screen. It's a really good CD.

I know it can be hard to learn to type without looking at the keyboard. Try looking for a Keyboard Skills programme called ISV. My work uses this to teach its staff to type with far more speed and quality and it works. hope this helps you.

I no longer look at my keyboard when I type, thanks to the classes I have taken in school. I now know how to type with out looking at the keyboard and my typing is a lot faster too.

No I havn't had to look at my keyboard since about 2 years ago when I took a typing class. And now abot 2 years later I can talk and watch TV and think while typing. When you type alot and you have the keys memorized. Typing is just like doing nothing at all. But you have to get pretty good before you can't look at the keys you are typing. It took me about 5 months before I could type slow without looking at the keys and I would rather type slow and not look at the keys becuase when you do that you are memorizing the keys. So to all you people who don't have the keys memorized I would advise you to type without looking at the keys even if it's slow becuase it will pay off in the long run.

Before, I used to look at the keyboard while typing. But since the day I became addicted to cyber chat, I realized I can now type faster without having to look at the keybord. Also, the keyboard that I was using a month ago didn't show clearly the letters and the numbers. It didn't worry me much because I can type without looking at it anymore. But of course, there are still times I look at it too every now and then. But at least, not all the time. :)
