Why is it that some doctors made a wrongful diagnosis? Is it because some signs and symptoms are mostly the same with other diseases? Or is it because there is a negligence on their part?

I think some doctors make the wrong diagnosis because some diseases mask certain signs and symptoms that are supposed to come out. You're also right in saying that some diseases have a lot of similarities in terms of signs and symptoms, that even with laboratory tests, the doctor still may have to do trial-and-error and further observation. Another thing, the patient may have forgotten to give an important detail about the sickness, or may have disregarded to mention other important points during history-taking. Finally, doctors are only humans -- they make mistakes too, because just like everyone else, they're not perfect.

They are only human. I'm sure they are doing their best but there are lots of diseases and lots of symptoms. I guess they should just order a lot of tests to make sure instead of guessing.

Doctors can only diagnose based on information gathered during the history, physical exam and laboratory. If there is some discrepancy in the information gathered, there might be some errors in the diagnosis. Also, you are right in saying that some diseases have similar signs and symptoms. No doctor wants to have a wrong diagnosis, though, because the right treatment is based upon the correct diagnosis.

Had you asked me this a year ago I would have not known how to answer it but the nightmares my doctor's surgery have given me in this last year has put me off the medical profession somewhat. I went to the doctor's over 18 months ago with symptoms of diabetes (which I did not know at the time) but I described them quite clearly to the doctor, he couldn't get me out of his office fast enough saying it must be hormonal and I didn't want to make a fuss as I thought I was being a bother to the doctor. 6 months later when I went in for routine checks I was diagnosed with diabetes and the symptoms they asked if I had were the ones I had complained of previously. They had it on record that my mother was diabetic and they didn't even think to consider that or suggest it. I am not a doctor so I didn't think to get checked for diabetes, after all my mum didn't get it till her mid 50s. I was also told I needed to have additional blood tests as there were problems with various blood samples I gave, I was given hospital appointments arranged by my surgery which were cancelled no less than 3 times and eventually after giving blood at the surgery about a dozen times they told me my blood was fine! I was worrying about it for months! I had an eye infection and couldn't go to work as my eye was swollen so badly, I was given medication for that which did work but didn't get rid of the infection completely and I kept getting prescribed with different medication. Not once was I referred to a specialist to see what was wrong with my eye. AND on top of all that I was diagnosed with gout in my foot and given medication for it which made me really sick for 3 days (I had to take time off work which I never do) and then I was told it was a misdiagnosis. These things happened with 3 different doctors at my surgery. Now I've always had respect for doctors but these jokers are beyond a joke, they're always in a hurry to diagnose you and get you out of their office within 5 or 10 minutes - no wonder they're making so many incorrect diagnoses. I'm now in the process of making a formal complaint to the medical authorities and changing my doctors. Maybe there's some out there that are actually bothered about really helping their patients rather than 5 minute appointments just to keep their profits up!

It only depend upon the doctor, maybe other doctors just really want to make their work easier by just diagnosing even without really checking up a patient, I've experience that before and it is really bad, I hate it... I drink the wrong prescription as well to my uncle, he suffered bad after the doctors diagnosis, the prescription was really high dosage... I really hate doctors doing that horrible thing, they are made doctors to promote good health and not diseases... They promise a lot in their ethics, they all should live in it...
