varicose veins, is there a way to get rid of them?

my friend is always whining about her "varicose veins" in her legs... every time we're together she always asks me about it and just what measures she should do to avoid and erase it in her life.. but i just don't know a thing about it... is there a way to get rid of them? without using any surgery? how do we avoid it?
