I thought it had to do with the St. Valentines Day massacre in Chicago. At least I know it took place on that particular day, I dont know if it led to the popularity of the day though.

My understanding is it is the Feast of St. Valentine. He helped people to get married in secret during some oppressive period of time in history. Check the bible and see if there is more info on this.
